This Cat

cat in shelter cage

I came across the poem “This Cat” by Karen D. Mitchell on my online travels, and it touched me deeply. Karen is the publisher of the blog Neko Scribe, where she and her tortoiseshell cat Calpyso the Watch Cat share news and views related to animal welfare in their hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as across the nation and the world.

I’m republishing the poem with Karen’s permission.

and paws that stretch
far, like a child’s hand

Holiday 2012: Can you foster a lonely cat for the holidays?

Help make the holidays brighter for a shelter cat.

Our cats will spend the holidays surrounded by those who love them, in a warm home, with full tummies and plenty of toys. That’s quite a contrast to how shelter cats will spend their holidays. For them, they’re not going to be any different from any other day spent waiting for that one human who will rescue them and give them a forever home.

To help make the holidays brighter for some of these shelter cats, is sponsoring its annual Foster A Lonely Pet For The Holidays program, and asks you to open your heart and home to a cat from a shelter or rescue group this holiday season. For more information and a list of participating shelters and rescue groups, please visit Staff and volunteers at each organization will be available to answer questions about the fostering process and help select a pet who will be a good match for the foster family’s lifestyle.Continue Reading

June is Adopt-A-Cat Month: here’s how you can help

Each spring during kitten season, thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats already in shelters and foster homes across the country. The American Humane Association has designated June as Adopt-a-Cat Month® to help find these cats permanent homes.

This spring, the situation at shelters across the country is even more dire than usual. A mild winter across many parts of the US sparked more cats to go into heat, which resulted in additional pregnancies. One shelter in the Washington DC area, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Virginia, has no more room to take in additional cats. WUSA9 TV reports that the shelter has reached its capacity, and is reaching out to the community for help. The shelter is desperate for foster homes, and has no cage space for surrendered cats.

I doubt that they’re the only shelter in the country facing these problems. Continue Reading

A tortie kitten named Ingrid

Ingrid the tortoiseshell cat

It’s not every day that someone names a kitten after you! I’m honored that Cheryl, a Conscious Cat reader and volunteer for Forever Home Feline Ranch in Springfield, IL, named this sweet little tortie after me.

Little Ingrid was a stray who was found wandering the streets of Springfield, IL. The folks from Forever Home Feline Ranch bailed her out of their local animal control shelter, and she is now safe with them. Ingrid would love to find her forever home and a family to love. She is very sweet and playful. She loves to be held and gives occaional love bites (she is, after all, a tortie!).Continue Reading

Adopt a “less adoptable” pet week

special needs cats less adoptable pet week

Black cats. FIV+ cats. Senior cats. Special needs cats.  These are just some of the factors that can make a cat seem “less adoptable.” To promote these special cats (and dogs, too), Petfinder has designated September 17 – 25 as “Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week.” I actually don’t like the term “less adoptable” at all, which is why I put it in quotes – I prefer to think of these cats as extra special.Continue Reading

June is Adopt-A-Cat Month – Share Your Cat Adoption Stories

Sponsored by the American Humane Association and the CATalyst Council, Adopt-a-Cat Month is designed to help make a difference in the lives of cats.

Approximately 4 million cats end up in shelters every year, including thousands born every spring and summer during “kitten season.” Your local shelter and rescue group is brimming with cats of every breed, age and personality just waiting for a loving home. Whether you prefer young and frisky or mature and mellow, you’re sure to find the perfect cat companion during Adopt-A-Cat Month!

The Conscious Cat wants to hear your stories!  Did you adopt your cat from a shelter or rescue group?  What made you pick this particular cat over all the others at the shelter?  Or did kitty pick you?  Do you work or volunteer at a shelter?  Do you have a favorite adoption story?

Leave your story in a comment, and, if you’d like, introduce the shelter or rescue group you adopted your kitty from and leave a link in the comment so they can get some recognition, too.   At the end of the month, we’ll pick the most heart-touching story, and the winner will receive an autographed copy of Buckley’s Story.
