I need to preface this review with two things: first, I’m a big fan of Yasmine Surovec’s cartoons. She is the creator of Cat vs. Human, and has a unique way of capturing cats and their varying personalities and the humans who serve them. Her whimsical drawings always make me smile or nod my head in recognition. And, second, I really dislike the term “cat lady.” I don’t care how much effort there has been over the last few years to make that term more “hip” and acceptable, for most people, the mind still inserts “crazy” when they hear those two words. I wrote an opinion piece about this topic several years ago, and what I wrote then still holds true for me today, so I’ll spare you the soap box here.Continue Reading
Do you keep a journal? Do you still take notes by hand? I do both. As much as I love my computer and tablet, I feel that when it comes to journaling, there’s something about writing by hand that enhances the benefits of the practice. As for note taking, I find that I retain more when I take notes by hand, and there are actually some studies that support this.
And of course, note taking and journaling is way more fun when you do it in cat-themed journals or notebooks! I’ve rounded up a few favorites for you.Continue Reading
If you’re still looking for a calendar for the new year, and if you love black cats, you’re going to love Compositions in Black and Green, created by animal artist Bernadette Kazmarski of The Creative Cat.
This calendar, which comes both as a wall calendar and as a journal calendar, celebrates the beauty of black cats. Black cats are often left behind in shelters, and Bernadette hopes that this collection of silly, cute and artful photos of her five black cats frolicking in their mint green and white bathroom will show others the joy black cats can bring into their lives.
I received the wall version of the calendar for review. The photos are absolutely wonderful. Each month features one large and two or three smaller photos. (Click on the photos for a larger view.) I’ve often heard people say that it’s hard to read the emotion on a black cat’s face – this calendar definitely disproves that misconception.Continue Reading
If you’re still looking for a calendar for the new year, you’re going to love In the Kitchen with Cookie, created by animal artist Bernadette Kazmarski of The Creative Cat.
This calendar, which comes both as a wall calendar and as a journal calendar, is a sweet tribute to Bernadette’s tortoiseshell cat Cookie, who passed away a year ago. Cookie’s intrepid spirit of curiosity often landed her in bowls and other kitchen accessories, and Bernadette captured her in a series of photos exploring alternate uses of these items.
I received the journal version of the calendar for review. It’s beautifully designed: each page features a blue and white checked “tablecloth’ background that really sets off Cookie’s beautiful tortie colors. Each month features a recipe along with a little back story about the recipe, and how Cookie found herself in her “compromising position” shown in the photos.
