I’ve long been a fan of ZiwiPeak, and the brand has been on my list of best cat foods for several years. My girls do best on poultry formulas, and until recently, they weren’t available from this brand. Now that they introduced a free-range chicken recipe, I was excited to let the girls try it.
ZiwiPeak gives your cat the equivalent of a raw, wild prey diet and is made from over 95% raw meat and organs, including natural fat and bone. The food contains no rendered meats or meat by-products. They add no artificial colors or flavors, no carrageenan, no chemical preservatives, no grains or potatoes, and no added salts, sugars, gelatin or glycerines or cheap fillers.
ZiwiPeak uses free-range, grass-fed meat raised on traceable, approved New Zealand farms, and seafood caught using ecologically sustainable practices under New Zealand’s stringent, government-controlled fish-management system.
ZiwiPeak adds New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel to all formulas to provide high levels of natural glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. They also add cold-washed green tripe, which provides important vitamins & minerals, digestive enzymes and probiotics needed for healthy digestion.
ZiwiPeak Free-Range Chicken Recipe
ZiwiPeak’s new free-range chicken recipe is made from 100% New Zealand free-range chicken, organs and green-lipped mussel. All farms are independently audited and certified as humane and free range, and their chickens are ethically raised without added hormones or growth promotants.
Ziwi does not use glycerin, yield enhancers, artificial gelling agents, fillers, or sweeteners in our recipes. The cans are BPA free. Each can is retort-cooked in its own sterile container to preserve the nutritional integrity of the raw ingredients.
Putting ZiwiPeak Free-Range Chicken Wet Food to the test
This formula is a paté style food. Allegra and Ruby eat primarily raw and rarely get canned food, and they aren’t usually thrilled about their meals on days when I do offer them canned food. That didn’t seem to be an issue for them with this formula. After some sniffing, they both dug in and cleaned their plates. I’d say that speaks highly for ZiwiPeak’s palatability, since Ruby especially can be a bit fussy when it comes to trying new things.
A flavor for every cat
ZiwiPeak comes in a wide range of flavors: lamb, rabbit and lamb, and beef. They are also introducing two brand new recipes: Mackerel and Hoki. I only recommend fish-based formulas as an occasional treat, but if you want to give your kitty something special, Ziwi’s new Hoki and Mackerel formulas will be a good choice. Wild-caught and sustainable blue mackerel are high in omega-3 fatty acids, wild-caught and sustainable hoki, a white, fleshy fish with a delicate texture, are high in protein.
ZiwiPeak Air Dried Food
ZiwiPeak also offers a line of air dried foods, using a modern and refined twist on the centuries-old technique of naturally preserving meats. This slow, gentle, twin-stage process eliminates pathogenic bacteria, such as salmonella and listeria, while protecting the nutrients in our ingredients. Their air-dried recipes are 96% meat, organs and bone, including 3% green mussel for natural glucosamine and chondroitin, and 7% species-specific tripe for added palatability and digestive benefits.
While I still consider a fresh or frozen raw the optimal nutrition for cats, closely followed by a gently cooked whole food diet, I would rank Ziwi Peak Air-Dried as the next best choice. Unlike canned food, Ziwi’s low temperature method preserves more nutrients. Even though the food has a higher moisture content than dry kibble, since it is fed as is and not rehydrated, it will be important to ensure that your cats get plenty of moisture from other sources.
