67_reasons_why_cats_are_better_than_dogs

I’m not a big fan of the “cats are better than dogs” meme, because I’m not a fan of anything that polarizes people rather than brings them together. For that reason, I was a little hesitant to take a look at 67 Reasons Why Cats are Better than Dogs by Jack Shepherd, the editorial director of the massive social media and entertainment company Buzzfeed. I’m glad I decided to check this book out.

In this tongue-in-cheek collection, Shepherd teamed up with National Geographic to document cats’ superior abilities in areas such as artistry, athleticism, and intellect.

The photos with their attending captions are well-selected. The quality of the pictures isn’t always the greatest, and I would prefer to see fewer photos of cats in costumes, but many of the photo/caption combinations are laugh out loud funny.

The book also includes some interesting facts about cats, which are also presented with a dose of humor: “The ability to rotate their ears 180 degrees independently from each other gives cats phenomenal hearing abilities. This makes them excellent listeners, and the irony that most of us choose to fill those refined ears with nonsense and baby talk  is not lost on them.”

And even though the book is supposed to demonstrate how cats are better than dogs, it is ultimately a celebration of the role pets play in our lives, whether they’re cats or dogs. Even though dogs get the short end of the stick in this particular book, I think even dog lovers would get a chuckle or two out of this book.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.
