In April 2021, the J.M. Smucker Co. voluntarily recalled two lots of Meow Mix® Original Choice Dry Cat Food due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The impacted products were sold at select Walmart stores in Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming. No other Meow Mix products are impacted by this recall.
The Company has received no reports of pet illness or adverse reaction and has issued this recall out of an abundance of caution. This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration.
If consumers have products matching the following description in their possession, Smucker’s asks them to stop feeding the product to their cats and dispose of it immediately. Lot numbers and product details can be found on the bottom and back of each bag.

My wife and I recently swapped brands from our long time brand to meow mix when we took on a stray outside cat. We only used the cat food for MAYBE a month, and didnt really notice any weird behaviors or adverse reactions (other than the older cat shying away initially.) Fast forward to last night…..I gave treats like I normally do right before our daughter goes to bed, tucked her in and turned on a movie. Around 11pm my wife and I call it quits and start getting ready for bed. My cat ALWAYS knows when its bed time and joins us in bed, greets us with his meow and eagerly tries to retreat under the blankets. However he didnt come. I checked his favorite nap spot in the master bathroom and sure enough he is curled up and what I assumed to be sleeping. I called him with no answer, and when I didnt get a response I ran my hand down his back and he didnt move. Tried a couple more times, and once I realized he was not breathing I tried giving him CPR. Nothing worked, and now my once healthy cat who had zero medical issues is currently being cremated. The only thing we changed is the food. I did notice the other cat had lost a little weight once I got to looking really hard. I hope he will be alright, and we are going to the vet monday just to verify as such. I feel responsible and guilty for my cats untimely passing and truly wish there was something I could have done to fix it. Be careful people, do your research…..I didnt think about it and now my cat is dead because I wanted to save a little money on food for them. These big companies dont care about your animals, only you can protect them.

Is it supposed to be 2023? That would make more sense. It’s pretty hard to find this food now.
The original recall was in 2021. There has not been a recall for 2023 yet. This site should be updated to reflect that information as it is really misleading.

I recently got an old bag from our local dollar stores and my poor babies ate almost the whole bag before I realized that’s why they were sick. Today, I went and bought tender centers and cleaned food bowls and litter boxes. Prayers that our babies are ok! They have been pooping all over everything and throwing up. The incontinent episodes are upsetting them, because they can’t make it to the potty. I scrubbed everything that might be contaminated!
Well I can understand that there was a recall on the cat food But they do up manufacture other cat food after the recall so it’s a problem about getting nail mix cat food in the stores Since for the last 3 months nobody has it in Fresno California and Clovis area

I have bought the small bags for the outside kitties that come around and sometimes mine have got a few bites. Always hate to hear this. You want to think any food is safe. Thanks for sharing.
