Mews and Nips: Rest in Peace, Texas Wilde

We were sad to hear that Texas, one of the cats who appeared in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, passed away earlier this week. Charlotte Wilde, who owns a London-based animal agency which supplies professionally trained animals to top photographers and TV and film production companies, rescued Texas in 2006. “A friend called and said ‘oh, can you pick up this cat?’” said Charlotte with a wry laugh. “He’s a super super silly little cat, and very clever.” Since then, he’s appeared in TV series, commercials, and, of course, the super successful Bohemian Rhapsody. You can see Texas in one of the scenes in Freddie’s apartment.

A Tribute to Brooke

It’s always sad when a friend’s cat dies. My heart hurts for what I know they’re about to go through as they mourn their loss. We’ve all been there, and even though everyone grieves in their own unique way, we all know how hard it is. This past Wednesday a tortie named Brooke lost her battle with cancer. Brooke has a special place in my heart. She belonged to very dear friends of mine, and if it wasn’t for Brooke, I never might have met them.Continue Reading

Mews and Nips: Inside the Life of a Feline Rat Hunter in Washington, DC

Washington, D.C. has a well-known rat problem, and despite efforts to control the city’s rat population that even included trying birth control on rats, the rodent infestation is growing. For the last few years, the Humane Rescue Alliance has been spearheading a creative way to fight the rat kings and queens of the District of Columbia: pairing local businesses and communities with feral, unsocialized cats to hunt and kill their natural prey. First developed in 2017, the HRA’s Blue Collar Cats program takes stray, feral cats that end up in its care, spays and neuters them, and then matches them to businesses or homes to catch and deter unwanted rodents. For more about the program, please visit NBC4 Washington. And while I realize that the topic of this story practically begs for political commentary, please remember that the Conscious Cat is a politics-free zone and all comments referencing politics will be deleted.

Mews and Nips: Kitten Rescued from Florida Beach is Looking for Her Forever Home

Our friend Dorian Wagner, who you may know as the owner of Cat Lady Box, has been involved in cat rescue for decades. I’ve always admired her big heart when it comes to helping cats who can’t help themselves. She once again came through for a grey kitten, now named Purradise Bleu, rescued from a South Florida beach. She first noticed the kitten under the stairs of a restaurant. Bleu was friendly and played with Dorian, but wouldn’t let herself be caught. It took eight days and two traps, but Dorian and a friend were finally able to trap the little kitten. Bleu hung out in Dorian’s bathroom for a few hours before her foster mom could pick her up, and she turned out to be a total lovebug. Bleu is available for adoption in South Florida through Good Karma Pet Rescue. For more about this wonderful rescue story, read Dorian’s account on Facebook.

Mews and Nips: Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness Adopts Two Kittens

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Van Ness – there’s just something about his infectious smile and positive energy that makes me happy. I was delighted when I found out that he is a cat lover, and heartbroken for him when he lost his beloved Bug not too long ago. Jonathan recently adopted two kittens, Liza and Bug the 2nd. “Losing Bug has been one of the saddest experiences of my life. Getting two gorgeous kittens in that full grown cat shaped hole in my heart is helping my reparative process immensely,” wrote Jonathan on Instagram. I’m keeping an eye on his Instagram for more photos of his new family members!

How to Approach a “Difficult” Nail Trim

Guest post by Laura Cochrane, DVM

If you ask Mojo the cat about his favorite pastimes, nail trims would definitely NOT be on the list. Sleeping and eating, yes. Nail trims, a big NO.

Mojo is a tough-looking former stray who now holds court at the office of Spirit Essences*. He was rescued by none other than Jackson Galaxy, the cat behaviorist who co-founded the line of flower essences with Jean Hofve DVM. Mojo loves people and spends his days going from office to office, making sure everyone is staying on task. He’s adjusted quite well to being spoiled and is even a big softie most of the time—except on nail trim day.Continue Reading

Better With Pets Summit Focuses on Emotional Wellness for Pets

Earlier this week, I had a chance to attend the Better with Pets Summit in Brooklyn, NY. The summit was sponsored by Purina*, and while my nutritional philosophy differs greatly from that of Purina when it comes to species-appropriate nutrition for cats, I admire the work the company is doing to foster the human-animal bond. This year’s summit focused on emotional wellness for pets and humans. The daylong event featured panel discussions with experts ranging from veterinary behaviorists to architects to anthrozoologists, and an interactive exhibit area that explored emotional wellness for cats and dogs in the areas of environment, cognition, behavior and nutrition.Continue Reading

New Partnership with Spirit Essences

Spirit Essences flower essences holistic remedies for pets

I previously introduced you to Spirit Essences, the line of flower essences owned by nationally known feline behaviorist and star of Animal Planet’s “My Cat from Hell,” Jackson Galaxy. The company was founded in 1995 by Dr. Jean Hofve, a holistic veteriarian.

One of the many things that drew me to Spirit Essences was the fact that the spring water used in the essences is enhanced with Reiki energy. Both flower essences and Reiki are vibrational healing modalities, and as such, the two compliment each other perfectly. When Reiki energy is channeled into a vibrational remedy, it provides a balancing energy that further enhances and optimizes the specific energies within the remedy.

I am honored to announce that I have been asked to provide the Reiki that goes into the spring water used in the essences.
