How many photos and videos of your cats do you have on your computer, tablet and phone? I have several thousand photos of Allegra and Ruby on my computer, and I don’t ever want to lose those photos, and the memories that are attached to them. Thankfully, there are a lot of different options to keep cat photos and videos safe forever. I use multiple back up modalities: I back up to an external hard drive, to a thumb drive, and to cloud (online) storage.

This is quite a switch from when I had my first cat, Feebee, who shared my life with me just before digital cameras became affordable and common. I have a couple of shoe boxes full of print photos of him, and the negatives (remember negatives?) are in a safe deposit box in a bank vault, along with other important papers. That’s how strongly I feel about not wanting to risk losing those precious memories. Buckley and Amber came into my life right on the cusp of digital photography, so I have a mix of print and digital memories of them.

Why online back up?

There are a lot of services offering online, or cloud back up. Services provide different options at various price points, tailored to your individual needs. Online or cloud back up services not only keep your data safe and online, they’re also geographically distant, so a fire or flood that might destroy your personal archives wouldn’t impact cloud-based storage.

If you’re considering an online back up provider, do your research. Is the service reputable? How do they secure their data? Will your data be easily accessible?
