Hi everyone, it’s Ruby! The other day, Mom left the computer on with YouTube up on the screen, so Allegra and I watched a bunch of silly cat videos that made us laugh. But when we watched the famous British Cravendale Milk commercial titled “If Cats Had Thumbs” (see below) it really got me thinking! The things I could do….
If I had thumbs, I would never have to wait for Mom to feed us – I could figure out how to open the refrigerator, get our raw food out, take the lid off the container, and Allegra and I would be set. (Yes, I would share with my big sister!). No waiting for Mom to mix everything up for us. No waiting for measly little portions. I would control how much we eat!
If I had thumbs, I could get the treat bag out of the cabinet whenever I wanted! That would be so cool!Continue Reading
Hi everyone, it’s Ruby! I have a big job: I’m Mom’s office assistant. Allegra helps, too, but I’m the one who sits in Mom’s lap most of the time while she’s working, so even though Allegra and I came up with this job description for office cats together, I get to present it to you.
Description: Feline Office Assistant
Feline Office Assistant Job Purpose: Assist human in maintaining hindering office operations by receiving and distributing communications laying on important papers; maintaining batting around supplies and sitting on equipment, paying particular attention to this thing called “mouse;” picking-up and delivering items (which means batting them to the furthest corner of the office); serving customers, training the human to serve.
Feline Office Assistant Job Duties:
Hi everyone, it’s Ruby! Mom said I should tell you about where I sleep at night, because she thinks it’s just “so darn cute!” I don’t really know why she thinks it’s so cute. I don’t do it to be cute, I do it to stay warm!
When we go to bed at night, Allegra curls up on one side of Mom, and I curl up on her other side. Usually, Mom has her arms around me, and Allegra is wedged against her back. It’s nice and cozy, and a good way to start the night. But as the night goes on, I get a little chilly, and for the past few nights, I decided that Mom must be on to something, because she sleeps under a nice, warm comforter.
So I decided to check things out. I very quietly crawled under the comforter, being careful not to wake Mom. Continue Reading
Hi everyone, it’s Ruby! Today, I want to tell you about hugging. I just discovered it, and it’s so nice! Well, I guess I didn’t just discover it: Mom hugs me all the time. But until recently, I’ve never hugged her back. Don’t get me wrong, I love it when she hugs me. I purr, and rub my face against her arms, and sometimes, I get so excited from being hugged, I roll over on my back. But in all that time, I never tried hugging her back.
Until last week. I was sitting on Mom’s lap while she was working away at the computer, and even though it was nice and cozy, I was feeling a little ignored. So I sat up, and looked up at Mom. When she still didn’t stop typing, I stretched myself as tall as I could! Then I leaned against her, rubbed my head against her neck, and reached my paws up. That did it. She stopped typing, and hugged me back. You can see from the smile on her face that she really liked being hugged by me!Continue Reading
Hi everyone! It’s Ruby! It’s been a while since I got to write something here!
Mom said I should share with you what I do when she gives me treats. She says it makes her laugh every single time I do it. I don’t know what she’s talking about. Treats are serious business, and there’s nothing funny about eating them!
As soon as Mom gets out the bag of treats, and puts a piece in front of me, I reach out and put my paw on it. You never know, Mom might change her mind and take it back. Also, sometimes, Allegra tries to snatch my treats away from me if Mom isn’t fast enough in getting Allegra’s treat out of the bag! A girl can never be too careful. Once I can be sure that the treat is mine, I start batting it around a little. Mom always laughs when I do that, which makes it even more fun. I love making Mom laugh.
Once I’ve batted it around a bit, I eat it, and then I go back to MomContinue Reading
It’s my birthday today! I’m two years old! I’m all grown up now!
Mom still calls me her kitten because I’m still pretty tiny, but not nearly as tiny as I was in this photo, which is the one that Mom fell in love with when she first saw me on the website of the SPCA of Northern Virginia.
Even though I loved Mom from the minute I first met her, I was nervous about coming to my new home. What if my big sister AllegraContinue Reading
Hi everyone, it’s Ruby! Mom is taking a blogging break today, and she said Allegra or I could write something instead. Well, I beat Allegra to the computer, so it’s my turn!
Mom has been busy putting the finishing touches on her new book Purrs of Wisdom, which is going to come out very soon. It’s going to be the best book ever – because I’m on the cover!
Mom says it’s going to be published on something called a Kindle. What the heck is a kindle? Is it a kind of small cat? Mom says it’s the thing she’s been reading books on lately. It doesn’t even look like a book, it’s just a flat tablet in a cool pink case. Mom says not all Kindles have that cool pink case, though. But then, it’s no secret that Mom loves the color pink, so I suppose it was inevitable that she would get a cover like that.
I love Mom’s Kindle!Continue Reading
My office is my favorite room in my house – which is a good thing, since I spend so much time in it! I have a big, white corner desk, a window with a beautiful view of the trees in my backyard, book shelves filled with treasured books and mementoes ,and a comfortable chair in one corner, which serves as meditation chair, editing chair, proofreading chair, and, of course, kitty cuddling chair.
Since I spend most of my day in my office, it’s not surprising that Allegra and Ruby do, too. They both like to hang out on the window perch next to my desk. They also like to help me work. You didn’t think I get all this writing done all by myself, did you?
As you can see in the photo at the very top, Allegra likes to sit right in front of my monitor. Continue Reading
Their mom, not so much. Actually, I do like hot weather and don’t mind temps in the 90’s – but not when those 90’s are inside my house.
We were affected by the massive power outage that hit the Mid Atlantic after a severe storm known as a “derecho,” a term I don’t ever want to see in a weather report again, came through here this past Friday night. But why don’t I let the girls tell you what happened.
Allegra: Friday night, we were all snuggled up in bed with Mom, and I had just started to drift off to sleep when out of nowhere, this rush of wind hit the side of the house. It felt like the whole house was shaking!
Ruby: Wha? What’s happening? I was sleeping!
Allegra: I jumped off the bed and ran to my safe place.
Ruby: Mom? Why are you getting up? We just went to bed!Continue Reading
In my reccent post An inside look at how one small company makes safe pet food, I introduced you to Pawgevity, a small manufacturer and distributor of raw petfood based in The Plains, VA. Pawgevity is involved in every aspect of the food they make, from farm to bowl. Their meat and produce is sourced from local farmers who follow humane practices. Pawgevity owners Carole and Norman King personally visit each farm they work with.
I recently had an opportunity to visit Pawgevity’s offices. Located in a refurbished former railroad depot, the offices features giant high ceilings, whitewashed brick walls, dark wood floors, a cozy seating area for visitors, and, of course, a freezer full of their products. I got to visit their spotless kitchen, where they prepare the organic produce that goes into the food. After a tour of the premises, and chatting with Carole and Norm for a while over ice cold lemonade, I was delighted to find out that they are adding a new line of rabbit food to their product offering.Continue Reading
