Nine Lives: A Story of Catastrophe, Compassion and Caring – Part Three: It’s a Wonderful Life

9-cats-collage

During my recent visit to Los Angeles, I met nine cats and Chery, the woman who is caring for them. I meet a lot of cats in my work, but rarely have I been as affected by an encounter as I was by this one. These cats lived through trauma and hardship. They are a testament to the resilience of animals, and their ability to live in the moment, no matter what they may have encountered in their past. Spending time with Chery and the cats was a magical and humbling experience. This is their story. The cats, left to right, top row: Arden, Zazu, Ramses, second row: Moofy, Tweety, Patterson, third row: Noodle, Sandy, Julia

Successful Campaign Exposes Dangers of Secondhand Smoke for Cats

second-hand-smoke

Secondhand smoke is not just dangerous for humans, it also affects cats. Cats living with smokers are twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma than those in non-smoking households. Cats with five or more years of exposure to tobacco smoke were at more than three times greater risk of developing lymphoma. Studies also suggest a link between oral cancer in cats and exposure to tobacco smoke. It is thought that cats groom the tobacco residue off their fur, which then damages tissues in the mouth, leading to cancer.Continue Reading

CatConLA: Heaven on Earth for Cat Lovers

CatConLA

I spent last weekend at the Reef in downtown Los Angeles, along with 15,000 other cat lovers, at CatConLA. This was the second year for this gathering of cat enthusiasts from around the world, but my first year. I attended in dual roles as both vendor and press, and I’ll have lots of stories for you in the weeks and months to come. Today, I’m sharing a few personal highlights.Continue Reading

Each spring during kitten season, thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats already in shelters and foster homes across the country. The American Humane Association has designated June as Adopt-a-Cat Month® to help find these cats permanent homes.

Shelters and rescue groups across the country can use your help, even if you can’t adopt right now. Here are a few ways you can help find homes for cats during Adopt-a-Cat month (and every month):Continue Reading

Who Will Care for Your Cats if You Can’t Get Home in an Emergency?

emergency-cat-care

Anytime there’s a tragedy reported in the news, whether it’s a mass shooting, a terror attack, or an accident, our hearts go out to the victims and their families. Their lives will never be the same. But there’s another set of lives that is also affected by these types of tragedies: the lives of the pets whose humans will either never come home, or won’t come home for a very long time.

It made me think once again about just how important it is to have a plan in place to provide for our cats’ care during unexpected emergencies.Continue Reading

Tortoiseshell Cat is a Diabetic Alert Cat

tortoiseshell-cat-diabetes

You’ve probably heard of diabetic alert dogs. These dogs are trained to monitor smells in the air for a specific scent on the human breath that is indicative of rapidly dropping or low blood sugar levels, and to alert the diabetic person. Goldie, a 6-year-old tortoiseshell cat who resides in Maine, has been performing this life-saving service for her human dad. What’s truly remarkable is that nobody trained Goldie to do this. But why don’t I let Goldie tell your what she does in her own words.Continue Reading

Why I Won’t Be Watching Nine Lives

nine-lives-movie

When I first saw the announcement that Kevin Spacey would star in a movie about a man being trapped in a cat’s body, I was intrigued. The story line sounds cute: Spacey plays billionaire businessman Tom Brand, a man who never has time for his wife and daughter. When he needs a present for Rebecca’s 11th birthday, Brand visits a mysterious pet store and leaves with a cat named Mr. Fuzzypants. After getting into an accident, Tom wakes up to find himself magically trapped inside the cat’s body. As his family adjusts to life with the strange cat, Brand must figure out a way to become human again.Continue Reading

Katherine Heigl: Actress, Philanthropist and Cat Lover

Katherine-Heigl-cat

I’ve been a fan of Katherine Heigl since her Grey’s Anatomy days (anyone else still miss Izzy?), but I didn’t really know all that much about her. I was delighted to find out that she’s a huge animal lover. She lives in Utah with her husband, two daughters, four dogs and five cats.

Heigl recently partnered with Cat’s Pride for a national media campaign. While the campaign is obviously designed to sell litter, it also aims to promote animal welfare. Cat’s Pride will donate a portion of every Fresh & Light Ultimate Care purchase to support the work of the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation.Continue Reading
