If you’ve read this blog for a while, you’ve heard me talk about 1TDC™ and about how much I like this supplement. I don’t use the term “miracle” lightly, but I am using it for this product. Now, a study performed at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, showed that daily use of 1TDC™over a period of six weeks resulted in significant improvements in cats with periodontal disease.

The study

There were 13 cats in the study. 9 cats received a daily administration of 1TDC™, the other 4 cats received olive oil for six weeks. The cats who received 1TDC™ showed significant reductions in all parameters of clinical periodontal disease except tooth mobility at 6 weeks. The cats showed a statistically significant reduction in pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, gingival index and bleeding on probing, whereas the placebo group did not show any significant change.

To full study was published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.

What is 1TDC™?

1TDC™ (which stands for 1-TetraDecanol Complex) is a revolutionary natural solution that keeps joints, muscles and gums healthy at a cellular level. This product goes beyond supplements containing glucosamine and fish oil. It works systemically as a catalyst to allow the body to improve joint and oral health.

1TDC™ is a proprietary blend of fatty acids that are derived from beef tallow. They are then formulated into a unique fatty acid complex in a CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the FDA) food-grade facility in the USA. These fatty acids are different from the essential acids you find in products like fish oil.

1TDC™’s unique technology is highly and rapidly absorbed, whether applied topically on the gums or taken orally in capsule form. When it enters the body, 1TDC™ has a tremendous affinity for white blood cells, which allows it to get where it is needed quickly. 1TDC™ efficiently does the job without interfering with other elements of your cat’s health.

Backed by research and veterinary dentists

There are endless products on the market that are designed to help with dental issues arising from tartar and plaque. However, until now, veterinary dentists and general veterinarians have not had a product available that directly impacts the gum health of their patients. With 1TDC™, they do.

The 1TDC™ technology has been clinically proven effective and was published in The Journal of Periodontology in 2007 and 2009. Dr. James Anthony, a boarded veterinary dentist with over 30 years of experience, conducted a double blind periodontal health study with cats at The University of Saskatchewan. His research demonstrated positive results beyond the studies published in The Journal of Periodontology.

“I was amazed at the positive results from the use of the 1TDC™ technology,” said Dr. Anthony, BSc(Agr), DVM, MRCVS, FAVD, DAVDC, DEVDC, Pag. “All periodontal measurements in the test animals improved significantly. The more I use the 1TDC™ technology, the more impressed I am.”

1TDC-capsule

Unique capsule design, easy administration

1TDC™ has been designed as a unique (and kind of cute!) heart-shaped twist off capsule. You simply hold the little heart tight and twist the big heart.

4 ways to administer

After twisting the capsule open:

  • Squeeze capsule and let them lick it as it exits the capsule.
  • Apply on top of your cat’s food. A cat’s natural licking motion will distribute the product onto the gums sufficiently.
  • Gently squeeze the capsule contents into the mouth. Squeeze half on one side and then the remainder on the other side.
  • Squeeze capsule contents on your cat’s paw or nose and he/she will lick it off.

A portion will be absorbed into the gums and provide the periodontal benefit, and the rest will be swallowed and circulate throughout the body to provide the muscle and joint benefits. It’s important to understand that the only way your cat will get the periodontal benefits is if a portion of the product is absorbed through the gums.

I bought it for my nearly 16 yr-old cat who was neglected by her first guardians and at 11 years old had never had a dental. She had lost a tooth, and had other problems as well so we went to the vet pretty quickly after she came to live with me. The vet said there was a lot of inflammation and plaque in her mouth and 12 teeth had to be taken out. Now she’s very sensitive about her mouth; I’ve had dental problems myself so I am empathetic and sympathetic. She also has arthritis, as I do, so I think this would be a good supplement for her. So far, I haven’t been able to get a dose into her. I’ve tried mixing it with a variety of foods, since she will have nothing to do with it straight from the gel cap. Nope, won’t eat it. Suggestions??
I haven’t taken mine regularly — I’m put off by its coming from beef tallow, as I don’t eat beef (or other meats). I’m trying to get past that.
But Bennie really needs the help! She has hyperthyroidism secondary kidney compromise, so her vet doesn’t want to give her an anti-inflammatory med. How might I get it into her?

I wonder whether you could mix it with something stinky, like tuna juice?

My cat doesn’t have such a problem with 1TDC, but when I had to give her a pill (which is an absolute impossibility) I got her to take it by burying the pill in about half a teaspoon of her favorite food. I gave her this first thing in the morning when she was ravenous and gave her no other food until she ate the little dab with the pill inside. She was so eager for breakfast that she always inhaled the pill portion without problem. I wish you luck!

Hi Ingrid, Cricket has been taking 1TDC ever since you first mentioned it. The vet said some of her teeth should have fallen out or needed to be pulled out many months ago, but the teeth are still all there and Cricket is enthusiastically chomping through bones on both sides of her mouth. My question is: how long should she remain on 1TDC? Is this a lifetime endeavor? What will you do with your kitties?

BTW, happy belated birthday; hope it was joyful. But the girls certainly look grumpy in the foto you sent out. I wonder if they were auditioning for the unoccupied role of Grumpy Cat. Maybe they just didn’t like the birthday hats….

That’s great feedback about Cricket, Patty, thank you for sharing! I’m planning on keeping the girls on 1TDC for life.

I had a wonderful birthday, thanks for asking. And I think it was the birthday hats causing the grumpy faces… 🙂

Thanks Ingrid, if you are keeping your girls on 1TDC for life, I guess i’ll be keeping Cricket on 1TDC for life also.

Thank you for all you do for us!

I’m giving 1TDC to two of my cats and I’ve seen improved mobility (ha, they won’t let me look at their teeth but fingers crossed). I would love to give it to my little female too but she is allergic to fish and there’s fish oil in the product. Please make a capsule for the many cats that have a fish allergy! I’d love to have her teeth improve.

Since the publishing of the book HIDDEN EPIDEMIC by Dr Thomas E Levy, MD, JD recently there certainly are connections between gum disease and a whole range of organs — from heart to cancer to sinusitis, etc — and the new 3D cat scan for detecting hidden pockets of abscesses that don’t show on ordinary dental xrays are showing where these hidden abscesses are.. In human dentistry with its propensity for amalgams, root canals, extraction of wisdom teeth, the hazards in the teeth and gums have multiplied without recognition til now….

So i am betting that if the 1TDC is as good on gum and joints as the data is accumulating, that we’ll see long term benefits in such a wide spectrum in organs as well as gums and joints. Don’t you agree, especially as we learn so much more about acupuncture/pressure/energy and meridians? ttyl
