There’s no question that cleaning the litter box is one of the less fun aspects of sharing life with cats, but it’s also one of the most important ones. And when it comes to something you’re going to be doing every day, multiple times a day, having the right tool for the job makes life so much easier.

Litter box hygiene 101

Keeping you litter boxes clean will ensure that your cats continues to use them. Boxes should be scooped at least once a day, preferably several times a day. Add litter as needed. At least once a month, dump out the entire litter box and thoroughly clean it with hot water and unscented soap. Don’t use harsh chemicals or ammonia based cleaners. Replace litter boxes completely after 6 months to a year. No matter how well you clean, the porous plastic will start to break down and eventually absorb bacteria.

If you must use litter additives to control odor, use enzyme or probiotic based products with no added scent. Baking soda is an inexpensive litter additive that provides good odor control.

When it comes to litter scoops, not all scoops are the same. The size of the scoop, the angle, the distance between the slats, the overall design – all of these can make a difference in how well a scoop works for you.

DuraScoop® Mini

Made from solid, heavy gauge steel, and featuring a non-corrosive, powder-coated finish, these scoops are going to be virtually indestructible. Sized at about 11.5 inches long and 5 inches wide, and weighing in at 5.5 ounces, they are easy to maneuver while getting the job done.

Putting the DuraScoop® Mini to the test

I prefer a smaller litter scoop to the large, heavy duty models. I find smaller scoops easier to maneuver around corners. Despite being steel, the handle is very comfortable and feels good in my hand.

I use doggy poop baggies to collect waste before taking it to the trash can in the garage, and these scoops are the perfect size to dump waste into the baggie without having to angle the scoop.

This scoop excels at getting urine balls away from the walls of the litter box and out of corners, something my previous plastic scoops didn’t do as good a job with.

Yangbaga on Amazon for a stainless steel box.
My best friend laughs at me because I’m always on alert for a better scoop. I’m trying this steel one next.

My scoop arrived from Amazon today and I absolutely love it. It is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I had a metal scoop which was pretty good but I wanted one with squared off front corners like this one to get into the corners of the boxes and it does a great job of that and of the bottom of the litter boxes as well. Best scoop I have ever used.
Regarding a stainless steel litter box someone asked about, I bought some stainless steel pans years ago at a restaurant supply place and they work well but I’ve never seen an actual stainless steel litter box either.

I want to add, now that I’ve used it several times, I can scoop in about half the time as it picks up so much more than any other I have used. This is important to me as I have several boxes to scoop. I am more thrilled than I ever thought I could be about a litter box scoop.

I use the Cedarific cat litter…my cats go outdoors so I have less scooping, but I like this litter because the urine stays in one spot and I can easily scoop it all out without the rest of the litter getting soiled…I do not have to change the whole litter.
Also, both cats use the box without getting litter everywhere. With one, I can sometimes not tell if the box has been used…..I only see a couple of paw indentations that tells me he been there.

A couple things about the litter box… My three are on a raw diet and because they digest almost everything that they eat the feces are smaller than my little finger with the other plus being that they don’t stink. When cats are on a raw diet the poops have very little smell.

Secondly, I’ve got my three on a pellet system and with that system and the raw diet the litter box is so easy. I don’t even use a scoop anymore. I put my hand inside a doggy poop bag like dog owners do, pick out the poops, tie it closed and I’m finished. Then every few days I change out the pad that collects the urine. About once every four to six weeks I empty the entire system. I put it in a tub to wash and put it all back together again with new pellets. I really love this system because I no longer walk on tracked litter all over the house.

These look like nice scoopers. I like a nice firm one. I always put off replacing mine, but really need to do it soon. I like the jumbo kind as I have three cats and one of them has dog sized poops. I scoop several times a day and put the poop in the Litter Genie and take it all out on Wednesdays when I change the litter.
