Black Cats have long had their special day – in fact, they have two days. Depending on who you ask, Black Cat Appreciation Day is celebrated on August 17 and October 27. And for many years, every year on those two dates, I have asked myself why there is no Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day. Well, that’s about to change!Continue Reading
I’m excited to announce that my new book, Tortitude: The BIG Book About Cats with a BIG Attitude, will publish on February 5, 2016.
This book has been a true labor of love for me. In addition to facts about torties, the book features stunning photographs and quotes dedicated to these beautiful cats. Ultimately, Tortitude is a tribute to these special cats and their passionate guardians.Continue Reading
A new study at the University of California Davis suggests that there may be a link between feline aggression and certain coat colors. Lead researcher Dr. Liz Stelow and her team looked at data from 1,274 anonymous cat caretakers who answered an online survey about their cats’ behavior.Continue Reading
Even though I have absolutely no scientific evidence, in my experience, when it comes to being talkative, tortoiseshell cats have most other cats beat.
Buckley was one of the most vocal cats I’ve ever come across. She had a range of expression from an almost silent meow to a very loud, demanding cry that almost approached a scream. I often heard her meowing or chattering somewhere in the house. It was almost as if she felt compelled to provide a running commentary on her activities: “I think I’ll go in the bedroom now.” “Oh, maybe I’ll jump up on the window perch. That looks like fun.” “Oh, look! There’s a big blue bird by the feeder!” It seemed that her constant delight at everything in her life needed to be expressed out loud.Continue Reading

“The gold and orange and yellow of tortoiseshell cats may seem more of an autumn theme, but for me those bright colors always meant June and sunshine,” says animal artist and writer Bernadette E. Kazmarski. “I love to welcome the summer with my tortie girls Cookie and Kelly on as many items as I can make.”
She originally designed these prints in 2001 before digital and gicleé printing were affordable to sell at art festivals and to donate to shelter and rescue events.Continue Reading
Each spring during kitten season, thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats already in shelters and foster homes across the country. The American Humane Association has designated June as Adopt-a-Cat Month® to help find more cats forever homes.
Even if you can’t adopt a cat, there are other ways you can help find homes for cats during Adopt-a-Cat month, and every month:Continue Reading
It’s not every day that someone names a kitten after you! I’m honored that Cheryl, a Conscious Cat reader and volunteer for Forever Home Feline Ranch in Springfield, IL, named this sweet little tortie after me.
Little Ingrid was a stray who was found wandering the streets of Springfield, IL. The folks from Forever Home Feline Ranch bailed her out of their local animal control shelter, and she is now safe with them. Ingrid would love to find her forever home and a family to love. She is very sweet and playful. She loves to be held and gives occaional love bites (she is, after all, a tortie!).Continue Reading
