Mews and Nips: It’s National Cat Day

national-cat-day

Did you know that today is National Cat Day? As the photo above shows, we think it’s a bit silly to have a “holiday” like that, since that’s obviously every day for all of us, but there’s actually a bit more to it than just showing our own cats how much we love and appreciate them. National Cat Day was founded to increase awareness about the number of cats that need to be rescued.

Mews and Nips: How Cats Choose the Food They Eat

how-cats-choose-food

Is your cat a finicky eater? Does he happily eat one food for weeks, only to turn his nose up at it one day? Do you have to offer a smorgasbord of selections to find something your cat will eat? A team of scientists from the U.K. and Australia recently published some fascinating research on how domestic cats choose the food they eat, and Dr. Karen Becker covered the findings in a comprehensive article titled When Your Cat “Stiffs” You on This, Here’s What She’s Really Saying.

Mews and Nips: All Ads in a London Underground Station Have Been Replaced with Pictures of Cats

cats-london-tube

For the next two weeks, The Citizens Advertising Takeover Service has replaced 68 ads in a subway station on London’s Tube system with pictures of cats. This is not a marketing stunt. The people behind CATS (get it?) are volunteers who raised the money to do this on Kickstarter. They want to inspire people to think differently about the world and realise they have the power to change it. James Turner, the man behind this initiative, talks about how this all came together on Medium.

Mews and Nips: Pet-Friendly College Dorm is Home to 100 Cats

cat-college

I didn’t have cats until after I graduated college, but this time of year, I often think about how hard it must be for students to leave their cats behind when they go back to school. Students at SUNY Canton in northern New York don’t have to make that choice: the college has a pet-friendly residence hall where 100 cats live with their students. Each student is allowed one pet. The college doubled its pet-friendly rooms this year. For more about this program, please visit NYUp.com.

Mews and Nips: Cat Videos are Like Catnip to Humans

cat-watching-computer

I think it’s pretty safe to say that most of you have spent countless hours online watching cat videos, and that you’re not spending even one minute wondering why people are so fascinated by watching them. But Jessica Myrick, a media scholar at Indiana University, decided to explore the reasons why people love to watch cat videos in her paper “Emotion regulation, procrastination, and watching cat videos online: Who watches Internet cats, why, and to what effect?”  Myrick found that the videos not only raised peoples’ spirits, but are a way for people to connect with others. For more on Myricks’ findings, read the Star-Telegram.

Kedi-Istanbul-cats

Kedi (Turkish for “cat,”) a film about the cats who freely roam the metropolis of Istanbul, takes a closer look at the lives of these cats and what they mean to the city’s inhabitants.
