Mews and Nips: Unplugging for the Weekend

cat-computer-unplug

Today’s abbreviated issue of Mews and Nips does not have a lead story, because I will be taking a little break this weekend. I will be recharging my batteries at my friends’ beautiful weekend house. We’re planning on relaxing, reading, watching movies, and eating my friend’s amazing cooking. There is cell phone reception, but no Wifi, so other than checking for updates from my wonderful cat sitter, I plan to not even look at my phone.

Allegra will be doing a lot of this when she’s not having fun with her Aunt Rita.

Mews and Nips: Rare Male Tortoiseshell Cat Available for Adoption in Queensland, Australia

male-tortoiseshell-cat

Those of us who love torties already know that they’re unique when it comes to their personalities, also known as tortitude. They also have unique genetics. The vast majority of tortoiseshell cats are female, because two X chromosomes are required to produce black, gold and orange coloring. Male cats only have one X and one Y chromosome, so technically it’s genetically almost impossible for a male to inherit the tortoiseshell coloring. A male tortoiseshell has an extra X chromosome, making it an XXY. According to a study by the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri, only 1 in 3000 tortoiseshell cats is male. The gorgeous tortie kitten above, named Selten (the German word for rare) is available for adoption from Southern Down ARK.

An artist who only identifies herself as Erika started decorating her daughter’s sandwich bags last year. At first, they were just doodles, eventually, she started painting full portraits, including cat portraits. She also does custom paintings. For more about The Sandwich Cats, visit BoredPanda.com or Instagram.

The week between the years has always been my favorite week of the year. The pace of life seems to slow down just a little bit, most people still retain some of the magic of Christmas, and it’s a perfect time for reflection. Continue Reading

When Dr. William Powers, a family practitioner in Farmington Hills, MI, told friends that he was going to open a clinic that would feature his two loves, cats and video games, they told him he would fail. Instead, his practice is thriving. The therapy cats are all exotic hybrids (early generation Bengals and Savannah cats) who lack the Fel D1 gene in their saliva, so even people with severe cat allergies are unaffected by them. For more about Dr. Powers’ practice, wonderful photos and the touching back story, please visit The Bored Panda.

We’re big fans of Mario Arbore and the amazing cat furniture he builds under his company name Square Paws. So it’s not surprise that Mario stepped up to the challenge when he was asked to create two very special cat rooms for Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center at North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, New York. The new cat adoption center project was spearheaded by Beth and Howard Stern, who asked Mario to create two cat rooms in honor of Billy Joel, as a thank you for his support of the new facility. The results are stunning! Please read “Two Odes to Billy Joel” for details and gorgeous photos of the two rooms.
