Mews and Nips: Pet Adoptions and Fosters Are Way Up During the Pandemic

pet-adoption-pandemic

There is some good news in the middle of all the terrifying, awful updates – you just have to look for it. One aspect of this pandemic that I find particularly heartening is that pet adoptions and fosters have increased tremendously while people are staying home, in some cases, even clearing out some shelters. Vox contributor Rebecca Jennings shares her experience of adopting a shy cat in Brooklyn. Next week, we’ll have a report from a Washington DC area based rescue group about how they handle contactless adoptions.

Mews and Nips: Samsung Redesigned Its TV Boxes So They Can Be Upcycled Into Adorable Cat Houses

I love when companies get creative. Gizmodo reported that in order to help reduce its carbon footprint, Samsung will start using packaging made from eco-friendly corrugated cardboard for its higher-end TVs. The cardboard is perforated with a dot matrix pattern. Scanning a QR code on the boxes with a mobile device grants access to instruction manuals for turning the cardboard into an adorable cat house (or magazine racks, shelving, and end tables, but honestly, I stopped reading at “cat  house.”)

Do you need something to cheer you up during these hard times? Look no further than Jonathan Van Ness’s Instagram! A couple of weeks ago, he started CATV, with one of his four cats, including tortie Matilda, reporting the news from his apartment. Jonathan is the proud dad of four cats, Harry Larry, Matilda, Liza and Genevieve. As a JVN fangirl, it tickled me that CATV “set” is the same Vesper V-Base furniture we have in our home. Visit Jonathan’s Instagram to stay up to date with CATV.

cat-with-kitten

We need all the feel good stories we can get these days, and this one hits the mark. Earlier this year, a sanitation worker in East Harlem, NY heard meowing coming from an impounded car. He discovered a mom and her kittens nestling on the back seat. He took the little family to Little Wanderers NYC, where they were fostered until the kittens were old enough to be adopted out. Mama LaBelle was patiently waiting for someone to give her her own forever home, all the while giving everyone in her foster home lots of love and snuggles. Last week, her dream came true: she found her own permanent home. Visit LoveMeow for the full story and adorable photos of LaBelle and her kittens.

cat-white-paws

Have you ever wondered why so many cats have white “socks?” This pattern is not seen in wild cats, and, as it turns out, the pattern dates back 10,000 years to when cats first became domesticated, and is a result of genetic mutations, domestication and developmental biology. Mews and Nips: Leap Year Kitties

leap-year-kitties

Do you have a cat who was either born or adopted on February 29? If so, then technically, you only celebrate his or her birthday or “gotcha day” every four years. And while all cats are special, maybe leap year kitties extra special? According to astrology, people born on February 29 have unusual talents and personalities. They are said to be good-natured, outgoing and friendly. They are optimists who see the positive side of any issue and are loyal friends. They are said to have a magical “sixth sense” about the world. I wonder whether that also extends to leap year kitties?Continue Reading

Mews and Nips: “Unexpected Item in The Bagging Area”

Pumpkin, an orange and white cat who lives near a Tesco supermarket in Norwich, UK, became an “unexpected item in the bagging area.” The cat was a regular for well over a year before the shop tried to ban the kitty. A spokesperson for the store told the BBC that it was not really possible for a store to ban a cat and admitted Pumpkin would probably continue his visits. For more about Pumpkin, visit BBC.com.
