The Night Before Christmas, Feline Style

I’ve always loved Clement Clarke Moore’s poem The Night Before Christmas. Over the years, there have been many cat versions of the poem out there, but none better than the one dictated to Harry Shubin by the Ghost of Catmas Future on a dark winter night.Continue Reading

Don’t Let Holiday Stress Affect Your Cats

cats with Santa hats

The holidays are meant to be a joyful time, but for many of us, they’ve turned into a stressful race to an imaginary finish line. Between parties, baking, shopping, and entertaining, there always seems to be one more thing that needs to get done. And all of this holiday stress affects our cats, too.

Cats are creatures of habit and don’t like to have their routines disrupted. They also pick up on our stress, and your stress can actually make your cat sick. I highly recommend managing your own stress during the holidays and take some time to enjoy the season rather than constantly rushing through the days – your cats will thank you for it.Continue Reading

The Nine Lives of Christmas Premieres on Hallmark Channel

the-nine-lives-of-christmas-movie

I have a confession to make: I have a soft spot for sappy holiday movies, and thanks to the Hallmark Channel, I can indulge this fondness from November 1 through December 31 each year. Most of the movies follow a pretty set pattern, as you would expect from the genre. Occasionally, they’ve featured movies with dogs, but this year, for the first time that I know of, there’s a movie featuring cats. And not just any movie: The Nine Lives of Christmas is based on the book of the same title by Sheila Roberts, which happens to be one of my favorite Christmas cat books.Continue Reading

The Night Before Catmas: The Adoption Version

cat_on_Christmas_tree

By Harry Shubin

T’was the night after the adoption event,
And all through the store,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a stray cricket on the floor
The Center Coordinators were all snug in their beds
Thinking of ways to move adoptions ahead.

The cage cards were hung on the enclosures with care,
Each telling the story of the cats who were there.
Poor Fluffy, poor Mittens, Whiskers and Sprite
Abandoned and alone on this cold Post-Adoption night.

Each cat was nestled in a Maddie’s Blanket, and thought twice,
I wasn’t naughty, I really was nice.
Why was I left in a shelter,
Almost about to pay the price.

When out in the store, there arose such a clatter,Continue Reading

Cats and Christmas Trees

Putting up my Christmas tree is a tradition I look forward to every year. For the past couple of years, I’ve approached this annual event with some trepidation:  after almost two decades of sharing my life with older cats, I now have three-year-old Allegra and barely adult, two-year-old Ruby. Surprisingly, neither of them has shown all that much interest in the tree.Continue Reading

Book review and giveaway: The Nine Lives of Christmas by Sheila Roberts

The-Nine-Lives-of-Christmas

Every once in a while, I like to read a romance novel. I also enjoy reading Christmas themed books. And I really love it when there’s a cat in a Christmas romance novel, which is why I was delighted to discover The Nine Lives of Christmas.

Of course, the cover had me hooked right away. I was somewhat familiar with the author. I read Sheila Roberts’ On Strike for Christmas a few years ago. I bought that book because it, too, had a cat on the cover, and I enjoyed it, even though there wasn’t a cat in the actual story. Apparently, publishers have caught on that people will buy books with cats on the cover – or else, they just have my number.

Rest assured, there is a cat in this book.Continue Reading
