Mews and Nips: Genome Sequencing Offers Insight into Lil BUB’s Unusual Appearance

lil-bub-science

We all know that Lil BUB is no ordinary cat, and not just because of her unusual appearance. This special little girl has overcome great challenges, is a published author, a talk show host, a movie star, and has helped raise well over $300,000 for animals in need. Now, scientists have discovered the genetic mutations that are responsible for her unique look and her bone disease, osteopetrosis. The information yielded by Lil BUB’s genome could have positive implications for researchers’ understanding of osteopetrosis not just in cats, but also in humans. Mews and Nips: Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness Adopts Two Kittens

queer-eye-jonathan-van-ness-kittens

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Van Ness – there’s just something about his infectious smile and positive energy that makes me happy. I was delighted when I found out that he is a cat lover, and heartbroken for him when he lost his beloved Bug not too long ago. Jonathan recently adopted two kittens, Liza and Bug the 2nd. “Losing Bug has been one of the saddest experiences of my life. Getting two gorgeous kittens in that full grown cat shaped hole in my heart is helping my reparative process immensely,” wrote Jonathan on Instagram. I’m keeping an eye on his Instagram for more photos of his new family members!

Mews and Nips: Cat Finds Love from Volunteer

volunteer-with-cat

When one-year-old Marmalade was brought to an Indiana shelter along with his siblings because his family could no longer care for him, he was scared and stopped eating. Shelter staff knew they needed to find a home environment for him, and reached out to Here Kitty Rescue. Marmalade was nervous at first in the large barn that serves as a sanctuary where the cats can roam freely, but eventually came out of his shell. But it wasn’t until Rick, one of the volunteers at the sanctuary, started working with Marmalade that he became a happy kitty again.
