Mews and Nips: “If It Fits, I Sits” Applies to Imaginary Boxes, Too

cat-in-box

We all know how much cats love boxes, but apparently, even the two-dimensional outline of a square box on the floor is attractive to them. A new study has found that cats will spontaneously sit inside an optical illusion that merely looks like a square. Believed to be the first of its kind, the study enlisted volunteers to observe cats in their homes. While hundreds of people signed up for the experiment, in the end the researchers got complete data on only 30 cats. Their results? That the cats chose to sit in the illusory square as often as they did the actual outline of a square — and more than the non-square arrangement. Ask the Cat Doc: Can You Encourage a Cat to Cuddle and Be a Lap Cat?

Ask-the-Cat-Doc-with-Dr.-Lynn-Bahr

Welcome to our regular “Ask the Cat Doc With Dr. Lynn Bahr” segment! Once a month, Dr. Bahr answers as many of your questions as she can, and you can leave new questions for her in a comment.

Dr. Bahr graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. Unlike most veterinarians, she did not grow up knowing that she would become a veterinarian. “It was a cat who got me interested in the practice and I am forever grateful to him,” said Dr. Bahr. Over the course of her veterinary career, Dr. Bahr found that the lifestyle of cats has changed dramatically. As the lifestyle of cats has changed, so did Dr. Bahr’s client education. In addition to finding medical solutions, she also encourages owners to enrich their home environments so that their cats can live long, happy, and healthy lives.Continue Reading

Mews and Nips: Easter Lilies are Highly Toxic to Cats

eas ter-lilies-cats-deadly-toxic

Our lead feature of this week’s round up is my annual warning about Easter Lilies. Ever year, I’m surprised how many cat parents still don’t know how deadly these flowers can be to cats. Just one small bite of a flower, leaf, stem or pollen of this plant, or even drinking from the water they’re kept in, can cause gastric distress, and, more importantly, if left untreated, can lead to fatal kidney failure. For more information, please read my full post here and please spread the word!

Mews and Nips: A History of the Mysterious Lives of White House Cats

cats-white-house

While cat lovers wait with mouse-baited breath to find out whether President and First Lady Biden will adopt a cat to join Champ and Major as First Pets, the Washington Post ran a fun piece this week looking back at the long history of cats in the White House. From Abraham Lincoln’s cats to Socks Clinton, cats from both parties have inhabited the White House for centuries. The article shares wonderful photos and anecdotes, including the time when Mysty Malarky Ying Yang Carter made a grand entrance at a state dinner. Click here to read Who scoops the litter box? Mews and Nips: Do Cats Do Math to Assess Prey?

cat-calculator

Math was my least favorite subject in school, and I never believed my teachers when they said I would need it to function in life. Now granted, we all do some level of math, whether we like it or not, but what about our cats? In her most recent blog, Dr. Michael Delgado reports on a fascinating study titled “Revisiting more or less: influence of numerosity and size on potential prey choice in the domestic cat.” The study used live prey to asses cats’ preferences as to how much and how large a prey they prefer (and don’t worry, no mice or rats were harmed, in fact, they were adopted by university students after the study was completed.) My favorite part of the study: five cats had to be dropped from the study due to inadequate participation. Click here to read Michael’s full report on the study.
