Vesper-V-Base

I first saw the new Vesper line of cat furniture from Hagen at Superzoo in Las Vegas last summer. I fell in love with it on the spot. It’s quite possibly the most beautiful line of cat furniture I’ve seen, and I see a lot of cat furniture. When I saw it again at Global Pet Expo last month, I loved it just as much, and picked it as my choice for Best in Show.

The entire line offers the purrfect combination of beautiful design, cat-friendly materials and absolutely wonderful workmanship. All of the pieces are simply stunning. They feature different combinations of platforms, cubes, and tunnels, and plenty of scratching areas.

I was offered a choice of models to review and I picked the V-Base model in the walnut finish. The furniture arrived in a box that looked way too small to contain such a beautiful piece, and if you’ve read my product reviews for a while, you know that the words “assembly required” are some of my least favorite words in the English language. Allegra wasn’t the only one who was worried.

The V-Base comes with extremely detailed drawn assembly instructions and all the necessary hardware, including a small Allen wrench that works with all the screws. I made decent progress until I got stumped by assembling the four sided cube, and ended up calling in a friend to help. Between the two of us, it didn’t take us long to put the entire piece together. Having a second person definitely made it easier, but I’m pretty sure anyone who is reasonably well-versed at following drawn directions will be able to put this together without help. Even though no tools are required, we found that it was easier to use a screwdriver rather than the Allen wrench that came with it.

The V-Base is made from walnut veneer. The scratching poles are covered in durable seaweed. The cube features a removable soft memory foam cushion insert. A second memory foam cushion attaches to the top of the unit with velcro strips, making it easy to remove for cleaning. The two round scratching pads are also attached with velcro.

The unit is extremely sturdy. Ruby runs up and down at full tilt, and it barely even moves. The suspended toys add a lovely touch, and can be replaced easily.

The V-Base was a big hit with both Allegra and Ruby almost right from the start. I had initially placed it in between our living and dining room, but ended up moving it just off to the side of our sliding glass door. The V-Base has become a favorite bird-watching spot. Ruby especially likes to watch from inside the cube. She probably thinks the birds can’t see her when she’s hiding in there…

As far as I’m concerned, the V-Base, as well as all the other pieces in this line, combine the best of both worlds: environmental enrichment and endless fun for your cats, and a beautiful addition to your home decor. Cat furniture doesn’t get any better than this.

The price point of the entire line is much lower than I expected, given the amazing quality. The V-Base model we reviewed retails for $89.99, the other pieces in the collection range from $64.99 to $179.99.
