I love reading books about cats who changed their humans’ lives, and since one of the cats in this book (Kit Kat) is a tortie, Kit Kat and Lucy: The Country Cats Who Changed a City Girl’s World* was a must read for me.

From the publisher:

After years of loving the vibrant city life in San Francisco, Lonnie Hull DuPont reluctantly trades her three-room apartment on foggy, lively Telegraph Hill for a farmhouse on a quiet plain in Michigan. She immediately misses the rhythm and the pace of the city, and the isolation country living brings has her longing for something more.

Enter Kit Kat and Lucy–stray cats who arrive at the farmhouse a year apart and each ask to move in. The antics and oddities of these two strong personalities wrapped in fur bring a new light to the farmhouse and DuPont’s life. Kit Kat, an obsessive-compulsive tortoiseshell, can purr her new human into a happier state of mind. Lucy, the playful, leaping Russian Blue who can nail a bat right out of the air, makes her laugh.

This memoir is essentially a love story – the love between the author, her husband, and the two cats. Cat lovers will recognize themselves and their cats in many of Kit Kat and Lucy’s day to day activities. The author shares her struggle with anxiety, depression, and the mixed feelings that come with such a major move, all with a focus on how the cats helped her through these challenging times. DuPont is also honest about the many mistakes she and her husband made along the way in caring for their two cats as they learn together how to give Kit Kat and Lucy the best life possible.

Both poignant and funny, this book is well written and feels like a conversation with a good friend. The story meanders a bit at times, and I would have liked it if the author had included photos, but I thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse into an ordinary life between cats and their humans.

Kit Kat and Lucy is available from Amazon*.
