I love Lucy Burdette’s Key West Food Critic mystery series. After all, what’s not to love! With cats, a tropical setting, and mouth-watering food (with some recipes included), this series has all the ingredients for purrfect escapist reading. And don’t we all need to escape from reality these days?
Last Friday, Lucy introduced you to Archie and Louise, the two real life cats on whom she based two of the feline characters in her latest installment on. In A Scone of Contention, a murderer is out to spoil protagonist Haley’s honeymoon.
Unlike previous installments, this book is set mainly in Scotland, where Haley and her new husband go for their long-delayed honeymoon. The trip takes a deadly turn when a guest at a dinner party is poisoned, and a man tumbles to his death from a tourist attraction. Of course, Haley can’t resist getting involved in trying to figure out the mystery.
I loved catching up with Hailey and her friends again. Lucy Burdette does a wonderful job with developing her quirky and likeable characters from one book to the next. But while I enjoyed learning lots of fascinating facts about Scotland, I missed the usual Key West setting of her books. Even though the beginning and end of the book take the reader back to this beautiful island at the tip of Florida, it wasn’t quite enough for me. Nevertheless, A Scone of Contention was a fun, engaging book, but I hope that Lucy Burdette will let Haley remain in Key West in future installments of the series.
A Scone of Contention is available from Amazon.
