Mews and Nips: Keep Your Cats Safe on Halloween

cat-pumpkin-halloween

I’m pretty sure that if cats had anything to say about it, they’d get rid of Halloween. From a cat’s perspective, there’s not much to love about a holiday when strangers come knocking at your door, your humans dress up in weird outfits and scary looking masks, and some  humans even try to put you in costumes. It’s up to us humans to reduce the stress of this holiday for feline family members and keep them safe so everyone can have a happy Halloween. Read our tips to keep your cats safe this weekend.

Mews and Nips: Saving Sergeant Whiskers: Soldier Needs Help Bringing Stray Cat Home

Seargent-Whiskers-Guardians-of-Rescue

Sergeant Kelsey is a U.S. soldier on active duty in the Middle East. Six weeks into her tour, a young cat visited the office tent – she was visibly malnourished, wounded, and so weak she could only walk a few steps at a time. Sgt. Kelsey began caring for the little cat and named her Sergeant Whiskers. The little cat became source of comfort and an escape from the pressures of the job. One night, Whiskers led Sgt. Kelsey to two tiny kittens. Kelsey will be returning to the States soon and is desperate to take her new feline family with her. Guardians of Rescue are working to navigate the trio through the complicated and costly process of making that happen. For more about Sgt. Whiskers and her kittens and more adorable photos, visit the Guardians of Rescue Facebook page. To help Guardians of Rescue accomplish their mission, you can donate here.

black-kitten

A two-month-old kitten in Susses in the  UK used up one of its nine lives when he traveled almost 40 miles in the engine of a car. The car’s driver was on the road for  more than an hour when she heard meowing. She immediately pulled over and stopped. When she lifted the hood, she saw the tiny kitten trapped inside. Firefighters were able to free the kitten, who is now being cared for at a veterinary clinic. For more about this lucky rescue, visit Metro.UK.

Mews and Nips: “If It Fits, I Sits” Applies to Imaginary Boxes, Too

cat-in-box

We all know how much cats love boxes, but apparently, even the two-dimensional outline of a square box on the floor is attractive to them. A new study has found that cats will spontaneously sit inside an optical illusion that merely looks like a square. Believed to be the first of its kind, the study enlisted volunteers to observe cats in their homes. While hundreds of people signed up for the experiment, in the end the researchers got complete data on only 30 cats. Their results? That the cats chose to sit in the illusory square as often as they did the actual outline of a square — and more than the non-square arrangement. For more about this fascinating study, visit NPR.org.
