Last week, the New York Times featured an outstanding article exploring the topic of feline hyperthyroidism. 40 years ago, this disease did not exist. Today, it has become an epidemic among domestic cats. Increasingly, scientists think that PBDE’s, a class of flame retardants that is routinely added to household products ranging from furniture to carpets to electronics, may be to blame for this alarming increase in cases. The Mystery of the Wasting House Cats is a must read for all cat parents.
If you missed any of the stories featured on the Conscious Cat this week, here’s a recap: on Sunday, we featured some wisdom from Charlie Chaplin, on Monday, we explained how cats communicate through marking behavior, on Tuesday, I introduced you to a line of “leafy” cat trees, on Wednesday, we told you what you need to know when hiring a cat sitter, and on Friday, we reviewed Adventure Cats. And don’t forget to enter our giveaway for a chain link cat bracelet from Triple T Studios!
For many of us, Saturday is chore day, and today’s video proves what we already know: cats are such good little helpers! (If you’re reading this in your email program, you may need to click through to our website – not all email programs support embedded videos.)
