While I was in Orlando for Global Pet Expo, the Orlando Cat Café hosted me for a book signing. This was only my second visit to a cat café (Meow Parlour in New York City was the other one I visited,) and once again, I was impressed with how well executed the concept was. Continue Reading
Even though most commercials are irritating at best, every once in a while, you come across a gem that you find yourself watching over and over again. A commercial for Netto, a German supermarket chain, featuring cats, will leave you with a huge smile on your face.Continue Reading
The inaugural Cat Camp NYC, a weekend that was all about celebrating cats and the many ways they enrich our lives, was a huge success. From educational lectures to informal roundtable discussions covering topics ranging from how to save orphaned kittens, help feral cats, design a home to provide an enriched environment for cats that is also pleasing to the human eye, to a keynote address by none other than Jackson Galaxy, the event drew thousands of cat lovers. In addition to the educational offerings, there were lots of vendors offering their cat-themed products. Continue Reading
When we help animals, we also help ourselves. Most of us, at one time or another, have experienced the healing power of cats. They comfort us when we’re sad, make us smile even on our most stressful days, and offer unconditional love. The family of a courageous, free-spirited girl named Kylie experienced this healing power firsthand when a tortoiseshell rescue kitten named Liza came into their lives during Kylie’s final days.Continue Reading
Jeff Plate is one of the most accomplished and hardest working drummers in rock and roll. The New York State native began taking drum lessons at the age of 12, after a sports injury ended his dream of becoming a pitcher for the New York Yankees. Best known for his work with Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Jeff has performed on every TSO release since the band’s inception in 1996 and has been part of every TSO winter and spring tour,) he has been the drummer for Heavy Metal icons Metal Church since 2006, and has also worked with Savatage, TSO guitarist Chris Caffery, and former TSO violinist Mark Wood’s Electrify Your Strings program. Jeff shares his rural New York state home with wife Cathy, two cats and a dog.Continue Reading
Yes, I know, there’s that other big game happening today, too. We’re not big football fans here, although Ruby has been placing bets on the Patriots – after all, she says, how hard can it be to take down a falcon? While we may not be watching the big game, we will definitely be watching the Kitten Bowl on Hallmark Channel.Continue Reading
Conscious living means making conscious choices about all aspects of our lives, including the cosmetics we use on ourselves. Using chemical free beauty products is not just better for you, it’s also better for your cats, because not only does your skin come in contact with those products, but so do your cat’s fur, paws, and mouth – and some of the chemicals used in conventional cosmetics can be harmful to both humans and cats.
Another consideration that is important to me when choosing cosmetics and personal care products is that they are not tested on animals.Continue Reading

I stopped reading the news two years ago. Because one of the first things I would do while still in bed in the morning was to watch the headlines. But as the morning continued, the negativity that is modern news was like a cloud. If my daughter and the early morning rays of a new rising sun wasn’t enough to shake all the problems of the world off, then the news had to go.
So now when I hear about important things, it’s through a family member, people I work with and friends.
Like when my dad called me to tell me about this orange tabby.Continue Reading

Shaw has become the go to expert on how to save and raise orphaned kittens. In addition to teaching neonatal kitten workshops at shelters around the country, her website and YouTube channel offer a wealth of resources on kitten care.Continue Reading
The vast majority of tortoiseshell cats are female, because two X chromosomes are required to produce black, gold and orange coloring. Male cats only have one X and one Y chromosome, so technically it’s genetically almost impossible for a male to inherit the tortoiseshell coloring. A male tortoiseshell has an extra X chromosome, making it an XXY. According to a study by the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri, only 1 in 3,000 tortoiseshell cats is male. Due to the chromosome imbalance, male tortoiseshell cats are (usually) sterile.Continue Reading
