How to Help Homeless Cats During the Holidays

help-homeless-cats

In an ideal world, every cat would have a home where she’s cared for and loved forever. The sad reality is that millions of cat don’t. Municipal shelters and private rescue groups are working hard every day to find homes for these cats, but most work with limited resources, and there’s only so much they can do. The holiday season is a time for giving, and there are ways you can help homeless cats even if you’re not in a position to adopt right now.Continue Reading

The Miracle of Lil BUB

lil-bub

Of all the “celebrity cats” out there, I think Lil BUB is in a league of her own. This magical little cat has overcome great odds from the time when she first came into Mike Bridavsky’s life at the age of eight weeks. BUB was born with several genetic mutations, including a shorter lower jaw and no teeth. She also has dwarfism, which means she will stay kitten-sized for her entire life, and she is the only cat in recorded history born with a rare bone condition called “osteopetrosis”.Continue Reading

national-feral-cat-day-2016

Today is National Feral Cat Day. This day was launched by Alley Cat Allies in 2001 to raise awareness about feral cats, promote Trap-Neuter-Return, and recognize the millions of compassionate Americans who care for them. The theme for this year’s National Feral Cat Day is “All Cats All Communities.” Supporters from around the world are advocating for the lives of cats and educating their communities about humane policies, like Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), that help save cats’ lives and protect all cats in all communities.Continue Reading

Cats May Have Been Man’s (and Woman’s) Best Friend for 10,000 Years

Earliest evidence of companion cats

The first evidence of companion cats comes from the island of Cyprus about 7,500 years BCE (Before the Common Era). This island is somewhat unique because even when water levels around the globe changed dramatically a land bridge to any continent never existed on the island. Thus, the only animals that lived on Cyprus came there by either swimming or flying. Given that cats are mostly loathe to swim in salt water, the only way cats got there was on ships, likely Phoenician ones. These ships were quite small, making cat stowaways unlikely.Continue Reading

A Street Cat Named Bob Comes to the Big Screen

a-streetcat-named-bob-movie

I’ve been a huge fan of James Bowen and his Street Cat Named Bob ever since the first book was published in 2012. This rags to riches story of an orange cat changing James Bowen’s life from down on his luck drug addict to bestselling author touched my heart in a big way, and I’ve been following the pair ever since. Watching the journey of these two soul mates has been pure joy.

This November, the story of James and Bob is coming to the big screen.Continue Reading

Stella McCartney’s Fall Collection Goes Wild for Cats

stella-mccartney-cat-fashion

British fashion designer Stella McCartney, the daughter of former Beatle Paul MCartney and American musician, photographer and animal activist Linda McCartney, has launched a new fall line that has gone to the cats!

The line features cat-portrait tapestry fabrics on skirts, dresses, a tailored coat, a ’70s-style football-jumper, a blouse and a silk dress. There are also plenty of animal patterned accessories and even a cat carrier. The designer is clearly having fun with these designs, and even uses the hashtag #StellaMcCatney on her social media channels.Continue Reading

Operation Homeward Bound: An Idea, a Van, Jackson Galaxy, and 43 Kittens

jackson-galaxy-homeward-bound

On June 27, Jackson Galaxy and his wife Minoo embarked on a 1,000 mile journey from Los Angeles to Boulder, CO to save the lives of 43 kittens through a new program by the Jackson Galaxy Foundation, Homeward Bound. I had a chance to speak with Jackson about the successful rescue mission.

Jackson and Minoo were alarmed when they heard about the dozens of kittens in overcrowded shelters in their community. The Humane Society of Boulder Valley had previously told Jackson that “if you’ve got kittens, let us know, because we need kittens!” What could be simpler than taking the kittens from a place where they’re going to die to a place where they could find homes?
