I have never had a cat who liked closed doors, which is why at our house, the only time I close doors is when I have a service person at the house. During those times, I lock Allegra and Ruby into my guest bedroom for their own safety. And they don’t like it at all. Allegra in particular has a very low tolerance for being locked up, and starts to dig at the carpet under the door after just a few minutes. As a result, the carpet in the room’s doorway has become pretty frayed over the years. Allegra even managed to rip up part of the edge.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who experiences this problem. Joanne Hernandez, who shares her  life with four cats, was getting tired of how damaged her carpet in every room looked near the doors. After having spent thousands of dollars replacing carpet, she was determined to come up with a solution to this problem. Joanne was working in real estate at the time and she was amazed at how many homes had this same problem.

She wanted to develop a product that would solve this problem while being safe for both cats and carpets. Joanne created the The CarPET Scratch Stopper™. This heavy duty floor mat is similar to the ones you can get to put under a rolling chair in a carpeted office. The mat is cut to fit under a door, extending on both sides to keep your cats from destroying the carpet. The side of the mat that goes on the carpet has small protrusions to keep it from moving around, the top is smooth plastic.

We’ve had a CarPET Scratch Stopper™ for a little over a year now, and it’s a purr-fect solution to this problem. I only wish I’d known about this years ago, before Allegra worked her “claw art” on my carpet!

  1. What a brilliant idea! Although I don’t have this problem (the previous owner of the house had allergies and we have no carpet except throw rugs), my sister does, in the house she is renting. The sticky stuff didn’t work at all, but this looks like the exact solution she needs for when her cats take exception to being denied access to a room. I’ll make sure she has heard of it.

  2. This IS a great idea! Like you, I should have had something like this when Waffles was staying in the kitten room. ; )

I wish they had a solution for carpeted steps. Waffles has created his own kind of art on the upright corners of two of our steps. I tried Sticky Paws, but it stuck to my fingers more than the carpet. ha!

    • I have one area on the top stair that Ruby would like to turn into carpet art, Debbie. I distract her with a toy whenever I see her going at it, and so far so good. I’ve also used just regular tape – it doesn’t look great, but it does seem to help and after a few days, she seems to loose interest in that particular area – until her next round of “inspurration”…

  3. That is a pretty cool idea!! Carmine and Milita don’t really scratch the carpet, but Jewel hated closed doors, and she would scratch under the door when it was closed (which was really rare). Thank you for sharing about this!

  4. What a fantastic idea … Miss Gracie thinks that the entire house is her domain (well, of course it is!) … and that clawing the 10 month old carpet will endear her to us no end. She will not use a scratching pole either … ! I think she thinks her name is “Gracie … No!”.
