Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they need meat in their diet to thrive. Their systems aren’t designed to digest carbohydrates. A raw diet is one of the best ways to fulfill cats’ nutritional requirements, but raw food, even a commercially prepared raw diet, may exceed the comfort level for some cat parents. I don’t think it’s necessary to take an “all or nothing” stand when it comes to feline nutrition, but I do believe that it is important to feed our cats a diet that is as minimally processed as possible.

There are few options for minimally processed fresh cooked diets on the market. One of the newest offerings comes from NomNom Now.

Two protein-rich recipes for cats

NomNomNow for Cats offers two protein-rich fresh cat recipes: Chicken Chow Meow (chicken thigh, breast and liver) and Flavorful Fish Feast (tilapia and salmon.)

Putting NomNomNow to the test

Since I don’t feed or recommend fish except as an occasional treat, I asked for the Chicken Chow Meow.

The meal-size pouches were easy to open. The smell reminded me a little of the chicken stew my mom used to make.

I wasn’t sure whether Allegra and Ruby would accept the texture. They’re used to raw food and the occasional paté style canned food, and NomNomNow’s texture, while like a paté, is not as moist as the food they’re used to. I shouldn’t have worried – they both inhaled their meals! The only things they left behind were the rather large pieces of spinach.

I love the idea of a fresh cooked food, and the portion sized packaging and home delivery make this a great option for cat parents who want fresh wholesome food without having to cook themselves.

    Hi Connie,

Thank you for pointing this out, the information regarding what carrots can offer our feline friends is actually incorrect on our site. We want to sincerely apologize for this. Rest assured, we will get this error fixed right away as the health of our Nommers is our number one priority and we want to ensure we are providing accurate information to all those loving pet parents out there. It’s wonderful that you are well-informed about feline nutrition and we can confirm that you are correct—cats cannot process beta carotene as a source of Vitamin A. Rather, Dr. Justin Shmalberg has included carrot in our recipes because the beta carotene can serve as a good natural antioxidant for cats. Again, we are very sorry for this mistake on our end; we very much appreciate you bringing this to our attention.
