I don’t keep an exact record of the number of books I read each year, but my best guess is somewhere between 150 and 200, and at least half of them are cat books. With that many books, the ones that stay with me even years after I first read them are few and far between. Gwen Cooper’s books are in that small group. Her New York Times bestselling memoir Homer’s Odyssey, A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wondercat, was published in 2009, followed by Love Saves the Day in 2013. In 2015, Gwen released the sequel to Homer’s Odyssey, Homer: The Ninth Life of a Blind Wondercat. All of these are the kinds of books that not only warm your heart, but actually touch your soul.
I had been anxiously waiting for Gwen’s next book, so I was thrilled when Gwen recently announced the publication of a series of short stories, Curl Up with a Cat Tale. The monthly series will feature of humorous and heartwarming short stories about the ongoing adventures of Gwen’s feline family. I Choo-Choo-Choose You is the first book in the series.
I Choo-Choo-Choose You is Scarlett’s story. If you read Homer’s Odyssey, you already know a little bit about Scarlett. Scarlett was Gwen’s first cat. She fell in love with the tiny little kitten from the moment she first came into her home.
Unfortunately, that love was not mutual. Aloof, independent, and filled with boundless energy, this little kitten was much too busy to return Gwen’s love in the ways that Gwen thought she should. Gwen wanted a cat who would cuddle with her, sit on her lap, and sleep with her. Scarlett had different ideas of how she wanted to live her life.
Told with sometimes raw honesty and often self-deprecating humor, we learn how the love between cat and human grew slowly until Gwen realizes that maybe sometimes, love that develops “quietly, through months and years of love, patience, and growing trust” might be something far more enduring.
I loved everything about this story, and I was once again reminded of what a brilliant writer Gwen is. The best writers paint a picture with their words. Gwen does this beautifully from the very first paragraph, all the way to the heart-touching conclusion of the story.
