I got a first look at Merrick’s Backcountry Ancestral Feline Diet line at Global Pet Expo in March, and I liked what I saw. These grain-free, protein-rich formulas meet the dietary needs of our obligate carnivores.

While I don’t recommend any dry food for cats, I have to give Merrick credit for introducing a line of kibble that includes freeze dried raw protein pieces. I still don’t consider it a good choice for cats, but if you absolutely must feed dry, this is a better choice than most other grain-free products on the market.

The grain-free wet recipes feature protein-rich morsels in gravy, in a variety of flavors and proteins including:

• Real Chicken Recipe Cuts
• Real Turkey Recipe Cuts
• Real Duck Recipe Cuts
• Real Rabbit Recipe Cuts
• Real Whitefish Recipe Cuts
• Real Beef Recipe Cuts

The wet formulas come in convenient 3 oz pouches and retail for $1.49 per pouch.

Merrick also introduced its first line of cat treats. The Backcountry freeze-dried raw treats are grain-free and come in two flavors: Wild Prairie Real Chicken Pieces and Pacific Catch Real Salmon Pieces, in 1-oz. bags and a suggested retail price of $3.29. Ruby is a big fan of the chicken treats!

Like all Merrick recipes, Merrick Backcountry is made in the USA and contains no ingredients from China.

Here’s your chance to try some of the new recipes for your kitties: the Backcountry Starter Kit includes one of each of the six flavors of the Backcountry pouches and a bag of freeze-dried raw treats.

  1. My cats Josephine and Hortense would love to try this, they’ve had nothing but Merrick foods since they were kittens and they are happy, healthy, active 10-year olds!!

  2. I’ve had cats my whole life, now I have one of my own and one of the most difficult things is his diet. He’s a very picky kitten and we’ve found the food he loves most are the Merrick pouches. However, they can add up quickly but I refuse to sacrifice quality to offset costs, I would like to win because this starter box gives us the chance to have him try more flavors that we haven’t gotten him yet. Thanks for the opportunity!!! 🙂

  3. I’d like to win because my cat likes trying new food! Don’t we all?

  4. I would love to win the Merrick Backcountry Starter Kit for my 1 year old cat, Keala Rayne. She’s an adventurous little thing that always loves trying new foods and goodies. I feel OK about the food that I feed her, but I would like to have her on something better and healthier.

  8. I would love to try this for my youngest! I’ve had no luck finding a wet food we’re both completely happy with.

  9. My cat is recovering from being unable to keep down any food at all. I’ve decided to change his diet to be overall better for him and include mainly wet food. But I’m a student and doing so is really expensive for my budget which is why it would be great to win this.

  10. I’m currently feeding 7 cats from ages 13 weeks to 15+. I’d love for my cats to be able to sample this new food. My cat budget is pretty tight!

  11. Thanks, Ingrid, for bringing this new line from Merrick to my attention. I feed my own kitties a homemade diet, but am supplementing a barn kitty with some extra commercial food. I HATE having to leave her kibble, but sometimes it’s the only way to go — this seems to be a healthier choice. Yesterday purchased a bag at PetCo and will ‘deliver’ it to “Little Bitty Barn Kitty” today.

  12. I worry about my cat getting enough water and with wet cat food I’m reassured she will. I also want her to not have any grains or by products like meal. Had a cat I loved died from urinalary problems; not wanting to repeat!

  13. Oh what a GREAT giveaway!! My I think my 3 furrbabies would LOVE this! I have been wanting to try a more healthy food and treats this would be a GREAT start, Good Luck to all!

  14. I am always looking for ways to improve my cat’s diet to make it as natural as possible. She doesn’t always agree with me, though! I’m hoping Merrick Backcountry will satisfy her discerning tastes. Merrick does a good job with many of it’s canine products, which I’ve tried. I have no doubt they doubled the care with the cat treats.

  15. I’ve been wanting to improve the quality of our cat’s diet and Merrick has been what I have been looking for.

  16. We rescued Garfield from being starved to death , so we are happy to have him and would love to give him some treats

  17. I would love to try this for my cats! They love rabbit and duck and we haven’t tried this brand yet! Thanks for the chance.
