Review: How Smart is Your Cat?

I think most of us would agree that cats are pretty darn smart. What, Allegra? Oh, you think that Ruby is too smart for her own good? I have to agree with you on that. Ruby, stop blowing raspberries at your sister!

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled book review! How Smart Is Your Cat is a fun little book that allows you assess your feline family members’ intelligence with a series of intelligence tests and easy to teach tricks. From Hide and Seek to Opening Doors to Hitching a Ride (teaching your cat to ride on your shoulder,) this book lets you rate your cat’s skill level on a scale of one (beginner) to three (expert) stars.

The book also provides a wealth of information on topics such as

  • basic training techniques for using the litter box, responding to their name, using scratching posts
  • tips on grooming and trimming nails
  • clicker training
  • feline agility

and much much more.

Allegra, Ruby and I had fun with some of the tests. We took the Cat Cam test, which measures how willing your cat is to be filmed or photographed. Not surprisingly, Ruby scored three stars on this one (“Your pet shows off in front of the camera”) while Allegra only scored two (it’s a little harder to get her to look directly at the camera.) Allegra trumped Ruby in Stalk and Pounce, while Ruby scored higher on Playing Ball.

Illustrated with beautiful photographs, this little book is fun for both you and your cats, and an entertaining way to learn about feline behavior and training.

We’re still working on some of the tricks. I’m guessing that training the girls to do a “High Five” would go faster if I tried to teach them one at a time, but what would the fun in that be!

Well, my Chelsea is smart enough to read hand signals and follow them, such as for get off the table when I’m eating, etc. I keep telling her she could have been a circus cat if I had been serious about training her.

That sounds like a great book! Lita would not do well on the Cat Cam test – it is SO hard to get a photo of her looking at the camera. Carmine, on the other hand, doesn’t mind having his photo taken at all.

I think this should be a fun read! But within my cat herd, I already know which ones attend classes by riding the long bus, & which ones ride the “short bus” ;-))
