Mews and Nips: Dell Computer Users Complain That New Laptop Smells Like Cat Urine

Cat related news doesn’t get much stranger than this story: ABC News reports that a number of people who bought Dell’s latest Latitude 6430u Ultrabook computer opened the box to find that the laptop, and primarily the keyboard, had an odd odor that resembled cat urine. “The machine is great, but it smells as if it was assembled near a tomcat’s litter box. It is truly awful,” one user posted in June. Earlier this week, Dell finally issued a statement that “the odor was not related to biological contamination nor did it present a health hazard.” Read the full story at ABC News.

I had not heard that Dell story. Wonder what was going on? Kind of weird. What a cute cat video. Have a great day Ingrid.

I cannot get a reply to go through over on that site even though having been previously registered with Discus. So here’s my comment after reading all 7 pages of posts regarding the smell emanating from Dell (whether from that particular laptop model, or its poor practices otherwise).

Yes, Dell was once associated with quality — about 20 years ago, but not since. I’ve been trying to resolve a chronic and serious overheating issue with a Vostro laptop — since FEBRUARY 2011!!! After 2-1/2 YEARS Dell finally issued a replacement machine that promptly fell apart the first week. Numerous repairs later, it still has a defect in the glide pad sensors. I’ve been waiting for 3 weeks for a reply from their “escalated” Pro-Support.

What a joke, but not funny. And the jokes about folks having their pets put to death because they blamed — in error — their cats for urinating on the Dell computers, it simply isn’t humorous. Especially so for the real world clients who went to that extreme (while STILL WAITING for Dell to respond). Do not reply that nobody would actually have their pets put to death over such a thing. Think again; it happens by the thousand every single day in city pounds and kill-shelters, for much less serious issues than suspected urination.

I didn’t mean to imply that there’s anything funny about people having problems with their computers. I also have no control over what is posted on Dell’s site and I didn’t read through all of the comments posted there. The ones I did read made me chuckle, but clearly, I didn’t come across any of the disturbing ones. You’ve read my site long enough to know that I would never consider anything that suggests harming an animal humorous.
