Mews and Nips: Soldier Rescues Cat from Afghanistan: “He Was My Saving Grace”

In the best cat rescue stories, you don’t always know for sure who rescued who. This was the case when Staff Sgt. Jesse Knott, a decorated, battle-tested army seargent, rescued his cat, Koshka, while serving in Afghanistan. KFVS TV in Oregon reports that even though soldiers aren’t allowed to have pets, Knotts made room for Koshka in his tiny office. In the middle of fighting a war, Knotts said the cat was a reminder of his life back home in Oregon City. “You lose faith in a lot but sometimes it’s the smallest things that bring you back,” Knotts said.

In December 2011, a suicide bomber targeted a convoy near his base, and two of his friends were killed. “I was so devastated that I lost all hope,” Knotts said.  Knotts was crying in his office when Koshka came over and crawled in his lap. “I’d lost hope in myself. I’d lost faith. Then all of a sudden this cat came over and it was like ‘hey, you are you,'” Knotts said. Read the full story and watch a video to learn how Knotts eventually brought Koshka back to the United States on the KFVS TV website.

Our friend Binga, who shares her life with Sparkle the Designer Cat, probably has her own chapter in the book on tortitude. Earlier this week, she shared Ten Tortie Life Lessons. If you have a tortie, you’ll probably recognize her in some of them.

If you missed any of the stories featured on The Conscious Cat this week, here’s a recap: On Monday, we explored why some cats don’t cover their poop, on Tuesday, Allegra and Ruby reviewed the new Sleeky Lounge from Brawny Cat, and we also shared the news of a recall of several popular cat food brands by Natura Pet for possible salmonella contamination. On Wednesday, we announced the return of Jackson Galaxy and My Cat from Hell to Animal Planet, and on Friday, we reviewed Crazy Critter Lady by Kelly Meister. And don’t forget to enter our giveaway to win $50 worth of toys, treats or cat supplies.

The two cats in today’s video are having a blast playing with bubble wrap. If you decide to try this with your cats, especially if you have one who is attracted to plastic, make sure you supervise them during play!

    Sgt. Knott and Koshka’s story is a moving reminder of how much our armed services sacrifice for us. I’m also moved by the risk the interpreter took to get Koshka to safety. All in all, a perfect illustration of the healing powers of the cat! Thank you, Ingrid for sharing this.

    The story of Sgt. Knott and Koshka made me weep . . . happy tears, though. What a risk that Afghan man took, and how wonderful that the parents paid so much for the cat to fly to the States. Love these happy endings!

    And the cats playing with bubble wrap had me laughing, although I was concerned when I saw the small bits of plastic they’d ripped off. :{

      That’s why I put my “caution” in there with the bubble wrap video, Bobbi.
