Compositions in Black and Green

If you’re still looking for a calendar for the new year, and if you love black cats, you’re going to love Compositions in Black and Green, created by animal artist Bernadette Kazmarski of The Creative Cat.

This calendar, which comes both as a wall calendar and as a journal calendar, celebrates the beauty of black cats. Black cats are often left behind in shelters, and Bernadette hopes that this collection of silly, cute and artful photos of her five black cats frolicking in their mint green and white bathroom will show others the joy black cats can bring into their lives.

I received the wall version of the calendar for review. The photos are absolutely wonderful. Each month features one large and two or three smaller photos. (Click on the photos for a larger view.) I’ve often heard people say that it’s hard to read the emotion on a black cat’s face – this calendar definitely disproves that misconception.

46 Comments on Review and giveaway: Compositions in Black and Green 2013 calendar

  1. This would be a great item to win!! I would love it to keep tracking of my kitty’s weight as I’m trying to get him back to his normal weight from before his kidneys failed last year. Would be a great way to keep track of all his feline issues and all his great days too 🙂

  2. I really love Bernadette’s work! The love for her cats comes out in her drawings and photos. Would love to place this beautiful calendar in my kitchen!

  3. I was fortunate to have 16 years with two lovely black cats from the shelter in Ann Arbor – Venus (de Milo) had a missing front leg due to a trap injury) & Jenny had a broken leg that healed. Beautiful girls & totally devoted to eahc other.

  4. My stepdaughter (who is 17) recently lost her mother to cancer. She and her mother shared a love of black cats. When her mother passed they had 5 black cats. Unfortunately my step-daughter was only able to keep one of them – we did find good homes for all the others. I would love to win this calender for her. Thanks for the great blog & awesome giveaways!

  5. I would love this calender because I love cats — especially black ones after being blessed at being adopted by the sweetest black felines that ever graced this planet. I would also love to replace the Las Vegas calendar my Mom gave me for Christmas 😉

  6. I absolutely love black kitties. I currently have two pure black kitties, Janet and Brad. As a child I had two at different times both names Sooty, and as a young adult had another named Sanchez.

My Janet and Brad while both pure black look completely different. Janet is a sleek, shiny coated black kitty who is the blackest black I have ever seen on a cat. My Brad cat is a tall black kitty that has a fluffy tail and the dreamiest yellow eyes. If you put him next to Janet he almost looks dark brown compared to the depth of blackness in Janet. Brad is just a big baby who loves his mommy. He likes to lay on my belly and snuggle his head into me so it hides his eyes from the light. My Janet is a perpetual lap cat that is very vocal. She follows me around the house like a dog. At night I am covered by my babies, including my tortie calico Columbia. Head to toe furry babies and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I also don’t have a calendar for 2013 yet and one that celebrates the beauty of black kitties would be a welcome addition to our home.

  7. I love black kitties! I have two, a long haired and a short haired. I always feel so bad for the black cats in shelters, because it’s so much harder for them to find their forever home. This looks like a really nice calendar celebrating the beauty of black cats.

  8. The black cats against that shade of green is just lovely, what a wonderful concept! It would bring me a lot of pleasure to be able to look at this work of art throughout my day. Thank you for the giveaway.

  9. I’m so pleased to hear all your comments about the beauty of love of black cats! I have lived with nearly every feline fur flavor over the years, not the least of whom were my two torties who owned my desk and one, Cookie, who is the subject of my other calendar and the reason I met Ingrid.

But a black cat rescued me 30 years ago and the rest is history. I now live with these five black cats who have refined my abilities as a photographer and continue to inspire me to new creative efforts every day–this is only one theme, but I could do a half dozen themed calendars each year to share the special nature of black cats. I love cute cat photos as much as the next person, but they are also an important inspiration and subject for serious creative pursuits. For the gift they’ve given to me I feel it’s my duty to show the rest of the world’s cat lovers who, for their own reasons, pass by black cats that they are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also fun, affectionate and highly intelligent. Well, some of them rely on their brother’s intelligence, but that’s okay.

I look forward to sending a calendar to the winner!

  10. I would love to win this calendar for two reasons! First, I use whatever calendar I choose to hang in my kitchen heavily throughout the year, writing down all of my appointments. Second, I have always loved black cats and felt that they are underappreciated. This would be awesome for me!

  11. I love black cats. Used to have a sweet black kitty named Cookie. This would look so pretty hanging on my wall. Thanks for the giveaway.

  12. Two of my 5 kitties are rescued black cats. I find black cats to be so beautiful, They are little panthers! So sad they are often overlooked at shelters. If I win this calendar, I will display it in the break room at work so others will be able to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of black cats.

  13. Just posted on FB.

Midnight Louie says he would lose his detective license if he didn’t get hot on the trail of this item for his Little Black Book. ML III seconds his predecessor with a big paw up!

Bobbi, in our mysteries we (ML and I) have long bemoaned the stupidity of humans for lingering superstitions about black cats. Experts say that color indicates temperament and black cats are the most loving.

Midnight Louie says his kind is the victim of “chromatic cleansing” dating back to the vicious witch-hunt centuries when black cats were killed along with their female humans.

It breaks my heart too that in these modern times so many are unadopted. Black is Beautiful!

    • Carole, I had not heard that theory about color indicating temperament, but the black cats I have known certainly bear it out. Don’t get me started on the stupidity of humans . . .

  14. Hi, Ingrid – Please don’t enter me because I don’t need a calendar, so will leave that opportumity for someone else. Hopefully the winner will be able to hang it in a place where other people will see it and be educated in the beauty and desireability of black cats.

The majority of the cats available for adoption at our local shelter are black, and it just breaks my heart because some are the most loveable, gorgeous creatures one could imagine. And Petruce, one of the ferals I’ve cared for over the years, was a schmoodle-cat, and he was absolutely THE strongest head-butter I’ve ever met! He’d rub against my legs, weave in and out of my feet, and push his head *very* forcefully against my hand for some serious petting.

I cannot understand the mindset that disdains black cats (and dogs, too!) simply because of their color.

  15. I just love black kitties. I never understood why they aren’t the first ones to be adopted out at shelters. I would hang this calendar up at work so everyone can see all the gorgeous black beauties.

  16. I have two, black rescue cats. I think they are so beautiful and cannot believe they are misunderstood. I want to hang this calendar in my office to show off how special black cats are to everyone who enters!

  17. This would be very special to me as black cats are my favorite and my 2 boys that I loved dearly both passed away and although it’s sometimes sad to look at pictures that so closely resemble them, I have a very special place in my heart for black cats. Beautiful calendar/journal.
