Fountains are a great way to encourage cats to drink more water. Water is critical to keeping your cat healthy. While cats get moisture from a raw or canned diet, they should still have plenty of fresh water available at all times. Cats as a species don’t have a high thirst drive, and this can lead to chronic low-level dehydration if a cat is fed mostly dry food, which in turn, can lead to urinary tract and kidney problems.

We received the Drinkwell® Lotus Pet Fountain for review last week. The girls watched as I took it out of the big box addressed to “Allegra and Ruby King.” I think they were probably expecting to hear some colorful language from me when I saw the words “the fountain is not fully assembled” on the instructions. Thankfully, what little assembly it required was something even I could handle, and a few minutes later, it was filled with water, plugged in, and ready.

The Drinkwell® Lotus Pet Fountain features an elevated drinking dish with multiple streams of water. You can adjust the flow of water. The pump is barely audible, and the trickle of water provides a nice background sound, especially on a hot day.

The fountain features replaceable foam filters to catch cat hair and other debris and keep your cat’s water clean. It is said to be easy to clean – I can’t testify to that since we haven’t had it long enough yet, but the instructions for disassembly and cleaning look easy enough. It is dishwasher safe, which I really like.

But how did Allegra and Ruby like it?

Allegra went to check it out immediately, as you can see in the video below. She was very intrigued with the flowing water until – well, you’ll just have to watch and see.

Ruby was a lot more cautious, and watched from a distance. It took her a few hours to warm up to this new addition to our dining room.

I like almost everything about this fountain. I like the sleek, simple design and unobtrusive color. I like the ease of assembly and the nearly silent operation. I love that it’s mostly ceramic: the bowl and the elevated water dish are. The housing that holds the elevated water dish is plastic. Maybe in its next iteration, Drinkwell® will change that and make that part ceramic as well.

  1. Would love to try this fountain for my two rapidly approaching senior age kitties to keep them hydrated in the desert heat and dry season.

  2. I would love to win a fountain for my fuzzies because the dog would stay out of it, and the cats would always have clean water!

  3. I have a special needs kitty who really needs to drink as much water as possible. She enjoys drinking from the bathroom sink when I’m in there, but this fountain would allow her to drink this way 24 hours a day!

  4. Oh, my gosh! What a great product! We try to keep our kitties hydrated. Every time we turn around, one bowl or another has a bug in it or is empty. This product would solve so many problems. Thanks for the chance to win it.

  5. We have 5 kitties in our household that would love this fountain! My oldest is amost 12 and has arthritis so this would be great for her since it is elevated. We have never tried a fountain before and I would love to see if it would encourage the cats to drink more. Not to mention the fact that it is very nice to look at….like a sculpture almost! Thanks so much for the opportunity to win the fountain!

  6. Kitty Jack would love a fountain – he only wants to drink VERY fresh water, but mom isn’t always here to keep it fresh enough for him 🙁

  7. My 4 cats drink lots of water and would love to have this fountain! I’d love to give them fresher water instead of having it sit out in bowls.
They have all their paws crossed 🙂

  8. Because this would be a most welcomed addition to the Shawnee Om Shanti Cat Sanctuary – where forty formerly feral cats have a forever home.

  9. I think this is beautiful! I too like the fact that it is ceramic. Much easier to keep truly clean (unlike the plastic Drinkwells). Very cool. I hope I win it for my furbabies! Thanks!

  10. My cats love fountain water and with 5 of them, another fountain would be a great addition. Especially in this heat!

  11. I’ve been using the plastic fountains for some years. But they are hard to keep clean and I worry about the plastic leaching toxins into the water as mine is outside in our enclosed screen porch and our temps climb into the triple digits during the summer. Our big boy, Henry, whom we rescued some years back loves laying out there, even on hot days, though he has a kitty door coming into the house to stay cool. He loves drinking from the bathroom faucet, if I turn it to a drip for him. But with a septic tank, can’t keep it dripping all the time. This fountain might just be our answer. 🙂
    Keeping fingers and paws crossed!!

  12. What a great looking fountain! Not only would it benefit my 19 yr old diabetic cat, Aztec, who also has chronic kidney disease (he’s a heavy drinker), but it looks like it would add a peacefully Zen atmosphere to the room. I can almost hear the trickling waterfall….

  13. I tried to post before, but I don’t see it, so if this is a duplicate, please ignore.

I would like to win this for my parents and their two cats. They have a fountain, but it is another brand and hard for them to clean, since my dad has health issues and my mom has nerve damage in her hands. Because it is hard for them to clean it gets gunked up with hair (they are shelter Turkish Angoras, lots of hair)and doesn’t run properly and then Harry and Hermione don’t get the proper water.

Late last year Miss Hermione wasn’t feeling so well and my parents took her to the vet where they found out that she was severely dehydrated, to the point that she was close to death. The vet pumped her full of fluids and gave her antibiotics. However, my parents did not feel they had the money to leave her at the vet’s office for several days worth of treatment. So they were sent home with very precise instructions. They bought eyedroppers and gave Hermione water that way every couple of hours for about a week. They also had to feed her that way as well. They nursed her back to health and she is getting proper water from a bowl, but I think that Hermione and Harry as well would love to have a great fountain that is easier for my parents to clean.

So I am hoping to win this for them. 🙂

  14. I’d love to win this for my new cat, an 11 yr old Sphynx named Bea. I think the beautiful design would go well with her Sphynx unique design, 😉 She does seem to like fountain water better, and this seems better, being ceramic, than my old plastic one.

  15. I appreciate the chance to win this fountain, and with having three generation’s in the house I have waterbowls in both sinks and kitchen floor and bathroom floor. I stopped leaving the water trickle run after I inadvertly flooded the kitchen. I do understand how important hydration is for them as just today my oldest, (Mommie) aka Granma returned from a three day stay at the Vet’s for Hydration. The funniest part of entering is as I watched the video I had the urged restroom use, as I returned two of the crew had taken my place and watched the video for me … them silly boys … thank you again for allowing me to share.

  16. My best friend has adopted 5 cats and is a great pet mom. One of her cats was recently diagnosed with cancer and a kidney disease, and he has to receive IV fluids every other day in order to keep him hydrated. I think this fountain would be a great way to entice him into drinking more fresh water along with the four other kitties. Thank you for offering the give-a-way. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

  17. Well, the Tux can use anything that will increase water intake, now that she has been diagnosed with CRF (early stages). Besides it would look magnificent in her dining area. Her Majesty thanks you for your consideration.

  18. Carrie Fagerstrom
‎Jean Shea and Pat DeWald – this new ceramic design looks to have all the features of the Drinkwell 360 I’ve been touting with a smaller footprint and much more attractive design. Plus, you can try to win one!

I’m guessing I did that wrong but you get the idea. ; )

  19. I have the HUGE stainless Drinkwell 360 and both my cats and I love it. However, it is joltingly obtrusive in our living room. This lotus has the falling water several of my cats like, a bubbler which Casper adores and, best of all, it’s pretty!

  20. I would love to win this for my kitties. We just adopted two cats (one is a kitten), and both are fascinated with water. I think that they would love this, and I would love to treat them!

  21. I, Don Antonio Banderies de la Gato deserve this fountain. No mi amigos I am entitled to this fountain. Don Antonio Banderies de la Gato.

( The Staff here, don’t let him fool you. He thinks he’s hot stuff because I almost named Comte which is Spanish for count instead I named him for my favorite actor.)

  22. I would love this for my kitties. My ex and I ran a small cat rescue together, but after 12 yrs I am leaving and taking 2 of the cats with me (he’ll still have 10 of them so he’s keeping the fountain we have right now). I promised Max and Mischief I’d get them a new fountain, since it’s all they’ve drank from for the past 5-6 yrs, was planning on getting one for them once we’re moved and settled in 3 months.

  23. It would be fantastic to win this fountain. I already have a regular Drinkwell, which my cats love. When they hear me refill it, the come running. However, it’s diffult to clean and I’d imagine a ceramic fountain could go through the dishwasher. If I won, I’d be more inclined to clean it more often and my cats would enjoy fresher water. Thanks for your consideration.

  24. I’d love to win this fountain because I love its looks and its ease of cleaning, and because I have lots of fosters, which entails separating cats, and the ones in my bedroom don’t have a fountain!

  25. I’d love to get this fountain to see if it’s more appealing than the stainless-steel one I have, which doesn’t seem to be getting all that much use because it’s almost entirely closed except for a teardrop-shaped part along one side.

  26. I would love to win this fountain for my 2 rescues, Kaya and Stanley. They love to drink out of the sink and I think this would be a much easier way to satisfy their cravings for fresh running water! Also, as a vet student, it would be nice to try this product out to see if I can recommend it to clients. Unfortunately finances are tight on student loans and I can’t spoil the kitties as much as I want!

  27. Buddy loves running water and begs to have the bath tub run just so he can drink it. He would love this fountain!

  28. We’ve tried out other water fountains for our furbabies before, but this one really looks like a winner! This would encourage them to drink more water which helps to keep them healthy and not as prone to kidney issues. They’ve all got their paws crossed! Thanks

  29. My baby boy, Louie would benefit from this water fountain in more than one way. He has Feline urinary tract disorder. He forms crystals in his little bladder, making it hard for him to urinate, causing a LOT of problems and it’s a very expensive vet bill.

These fountains are beneficial to pets because it keeps the water FRESH, and also promotes more drinking! I love the idea of being able to always have fresh water going for my cats.

It makes me feel good that I can be productive and be a part of my cats overall health and well being.

I know Louie would appreciate this water bowl, as would I. It would definately change his life for the better.
