Mews and Nips: Cat Interrupts Soccer Game

anfield liverpool soccer cat

Our favorite story of the week comes from England. NBC Sports reported that a cat sauntered onto the field during an English Premier League soccer match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in Liverpool, disrupting the game. The cat was eventually carried off by stewards. But that wasn’t the end of it: within minutes, the cat became an internet sensation with at least three Twitter accounts claiming to be the Premier League’s new star.

Twitter account @AnfieldCat claims to be the “official twitter of me, the Anfield Cat” and has more than 50,000 followers, while @liverpoolfccat claims they are the “first, the original Kop Cat” with more than 4500 fans. (In case you were wondering,  the original standing area at the Anfield soccer field was called a “kop.”) @CatAnfield has more than 3500 followers. Perhaps this is a case of don’t believe everything you see on the internet, but as the video below shows, the cat did, indeed, disrupt the game. The cat has reportedly found a home when a former Liverpool steward came forward, claiming that Kenny, as the cat is now called, was a local stray.

violet kitten heart surgery

Last week, we reported on a cat who received a knee replacement. This week’s surgery story is even more amazing. Veterinarians at London’s Blue Cross Victoria Charity Animal Hospital performed heart surgery on a tiny kitten. At only six weeks old and weighing just 14 ounces, Violet the kitten is the smallest ever animal to undergo this type of operation. Violet was brought to the hospital after being found abandoned in a shoebox with another kitten, who had sadly already died. She was cold, hungry and underweight.

Little Violet was having trouble breathing and swallowing food, and her vets discovered a serious heart condition. They decided to undertake life-saving surgery to give the tiny kitten a chance of survival. Violet’s heart was the size of a grape. She is recovering well and has started to gain weigh. She will soon be ready to start her search for a new home. Read Violet’s full story on Life with Cats.

sleeping cat

The internet loves sleeping cats! Last week, the Huffington Post asked readers to post photos of their sleeping cats. To date, they have received more than 700 photos! Since there’s nothing more relaxing than looking at sleeping cats, you might want to bookmark the page for future reference for those times when you need an instant stress fix.

And as promised, here is the video of Kenny the Anfield cat, disrupting the soccer game in Liverpool. Don’t you just love the heart-shaped white spot on his left hip?

Have a great weekend!

Awwww, the kitty on the soccer field looks very ill-at-ease, with all the crowd noise and no place to hide.

I’m glad there has been a good ending and Kenny was adopted into a forever home!

He did look pretty stressed, didn’t he, Pam? I bet he probably ran across that field all the time when noone was there, and probably was quite surprised at all the people!

The story about Kenny made my day. The things some cats do to get adopted 😉 And sweet Violet is the perfect Valentine story to melt any heart.

Geez…. I work my butt off for a little attention – all I needed to do was bring my cats to a soccer game and let them saunter onto the field!

Bless little Violet – I hope she will find a wonderful furever home!

  1. […] Last week, we reported on another high profile British cat. It is often said that cats have nine lives; this cat appears to have nine stories. After a cat disrupted a soccer game in Liverpool, there were so may different version of the Anfield cat’s story, including three Twitter accounts, all claiming to be the original Anfield cat, it was hard to know what to believe. Life with Cats reports that Shankly, as the cat is now called, is recuperating from an abscess under his chin at the Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre in Liverpool. It appears that Shankly’s soccer gamble paid off: the center will begin taking applications for his adoption in three weeks, after Shankly makes the transition from stray to adoptable pet. And yes, that transition will include being neutered. […]
