Today is our second blog anniversary! We wouldn’t have gotten to this point without you, our wonderful readers – thank you for reading, commenting, and adding to the discussions!

To celebrate, and to thank all of you for reading, we’re giving away a fantastic goody basket filled with fun things for you and your cats, including an autographed copy of Buckley’s Story. Look below for details on how to enter the drawing.

When I started this blog two years ago, I was looking for a way to share my passion for feline health and nutrition with a wider audience. I was also finishing writing Buckley’s Story, and I wanted to get word about the book out to cat lovers around the world.  Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the incredible journey this blog (and the book) has taken me on since then.

Amber was the inspiration behind this blog. She was the original Conscious Cat, a wise old soul in a feline body. Those of you who have been reading for a while will remember  her contributions to the blog in her Amber’s Mewsings columns. When she passed away suddenly in May of last year, I was devastated, and I still miss her each and every day.

Allegra joined our family in April of last year, and quickly became a regular contributor by sharing her life as a not-quite-kitten-anymore in her popular column Allegra’s World. Her posts frequently get more views than my own!

One of the things I love best about blogging is the community it creates.  I love connecting with other bloggers (you’ll find a list of my favorites in the Blogroll in the left sidebar), and I treasure the friendships that have formed as a result of these connections. I’m looking forward to making many more connections when I attend BlogPaws later this year.

When it comes to connections, one of the most amazing examples of this is a post I wrote in August of 2009 titled Tortitude – The Unique Personality of Tortoiseshell Cats. The post has generated almost 2800 comments as of this writing and has turned into the online home of a community of lovers of this particular kind of cat. What began with exchanging stories about the torties that share our lives has evolved into some real life frienships that will hopefully turn into a real life meeting in the near future.

This just goes to show – you never know what might happen when you start blogging. I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!

To enter the drawing for our anniversary basket, please leave a comment below and tell us how you first found The Conscious Cat. Share this giveaway on Facebook or Twitter and post the link in a separate comment for an additional chance to win. This giveaway ends Tuesday, March 15.

Disclaimer: Allegra does not come with the basket!

166 Comments on It’s our second blog anniversary – and we have a giveaway to thank you!

  1. First found your blog when researching about dental cat health. Liked what I read and ‘liked’ you on Facebook to get useful articles and tips on a regular basis. Just ordered a litter scooper after researching your favorite scoopers!

  2. HAPPY ONE YEAR CATTY- VERSARY, I FOUND YOU ON YOUR DAILY CUTE. KEEP ON CATTIN AROUND.PURRS AND HUGS, ALEDRA

  3. I found you through facebook, where I get all kinds of cat-related updates from pages I have “liked” on my home page. I forget which one linked to you but I remember noticing the name. Then I began learning about feline nutrition and discovered the raw feeding movement. After reading some comments on the subject, it came to my attention that you are also informed on the subject of nutrition and that’s what prompted me to “like” this page.

  4. I found this blog from the amazing Barbara Techel, and after listening to one of your internet broadcasts! I am so thankful for all the helpful information! Congratulations on 2 wonderful years, and many more to come!

  5. Hi Ingrid!

Congrats on your anniversary! You’re a wonderful person to have supported Fancy Cats Rescue Team with your successes (portion of your proceeds donated to FCRT at special events). Thank you!

  6. happy anniversary. just found the CC via a repost of your piece on disaster relief for the animals in the Japanese earthquake/tsunami disaster.

  7. I found Concious Cat through Blogpaws and Facebook where I was instantly hooked! As a cat breeder and rescuer, it is very important to me to stay up to date on animal news, nutrition, and behavior. The blog is a great way to do that, and my house full of opinionated Siamese agree.

    • Jamie, I’m so glad you find the information here helpful, and I’m especially honored that your kitties agree. That’s high praise, coming from Siamese cats!

  8. Happy Anniversary!! I found your blog when I was searching for new food to feed my 11 cats when they all began to throw up at the same time. The information I got from you saved their lives and my frazzled nerves! Thank you from the bottom of Samantha, Donovan, Sophie, Lucinda, Kelli, CJ, Tibby, Lovey, Elvis, Buddy, and Joys’ hearts!!!

  9. I’m not to sure but I think it was in another blog. Happy anniversary. Thank you for such a wonderful blog.

  10. I originally joined Facebook so that I could post pictures of the foster kittens I raise for the local humane society. As a “side effect” of fostering, I’ve ended up owning quite a few cats (and two dogs as well). I love to read about others who love, raise or foster cats and that’s how I found your site. Happy Anniversary!!

  11. I have two beautiful tortie girls whom I love with all of my heart and soul. My sister introduced me to the Conscious Cat on Facebook and then I started reading the blog. These are my first torties and I loved reading your Tortitude post. What little (or BIG I should say) personalities these girls have.
Keep up the wonderful work and kisses to Allegra. <3

  12. One night I was browsing through Facebook and came across a picture of a very sick cat with a plea for someone to adopt her. That sick cat is now my beloved Lola. I then became ingrigued with looking at different “cat” pages and I came across your Facebook page, and then your blog. Congratulations on your two year anniversary! Allegra is very lucky to have such a wonderful Mom.

  13. If I remember correctly, it was through CiCH and Robin around the time I adopted Koko (now Sophie) with Robin’s help from death row in Georgia last August – so many nice comments were posted and I started to put names and blog together – love yours <3

And Allegra is beautiful 🙂 Then again, all cats are 🙂

      • Yup – that was me. And Sophie is a happy kitty now – other than not liking my Gracie and my Gabby, but gracie and Gabby don’t care for each other either :-p

  14. Hey, we just found you on facebook. I can’t wait to read your tortie article. My Aunt Beatrice is a tortie, so we’re all big tortie fans around here.

  15. I’m not sure which of my cat-related searches led me to your page–something on Facebook, I believe. However I got here, I’m enjoying my time–and your newsletter. My cat Toby is currently sitting on my lap watching as I type this, and he expressed approval of your site as well. Congratulations on your two-year anniversary!

  16. I actually found your blog doing a random search for cat blogs! Thanks so much for the fun giveaway.

  17. I found you through BloggerLinkUp. I <3 kitties, and have two of my own, both adopted from the Humane Society. Thank you for the giveaway, and happy anniversary!

  18. I found you when I adopted my first cat, Buttons. I was searching on Yahoo! for articles about Torties, and your “Tortitude” article came up. I read the snippet and was interested and so I clicked the link and read the article. I’ve been coming back since.

  19. Hi Ingrid-Just stopping by to wish you a late, but very Happy Anniversary. Keep up the wonderful work! Squishes to little Miss Allegra ~R

  20. I found it through another blog. I think it was The Way of Cats. Or The Cat’s Meow. Well whichever it was I’m glad I found it! Happy Anniversary!

  21. Congratulations on this milestone! I’ve enjoyed the Conscious Cat for some time now.I’ve been trying to remember exactly how I was directed to the site; I can’t remember if it was through DorothyL for a review of Clea Simon’s books or if it was through the Yahoo cats health and behavior group. Whichever, I’m glad I found the blog. You’re a wonderful source of information about books and various thought provoking topics as well as entertainment. Thanks!

  22. OMG how did I miss this? I’ve loved you, your cats and your writing from the start. Huge purrs of congrats from me, and of course the Cat Saturday gang, Merlin, Gris Gris, Odin and Domino!
    HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY Anniversary!!!

  23. I first found Conscious Cat when I was trying to discover everything about my Chester Cheetah. Chester was a rescue from a throw-a-way dumpster for the Frito-Lay company which my neice works for. The truck driver in charge of emptying this dumster found Chester, he was a bout 4 weeks old and my neice was helping find him a home. I could not resist his gorgeous little face. But this little guy had some weird quirks that none of the other cats that I have ever had in my whole life (49yrs) have had before.
He has made me his main squeeze, follows me around like a dog, watches tv (his specific movies), opens window blinds to wake me, bites me on the nose if the blind trick does not work, hides toy mice just so I need to find them for him, loves to look at himself in the mirror, does not like dogs, and was a mix of tabby, some white and a bit of orange. I looked that up and found this description of Torbie. Since he is aging I (sadly) believe he is more of a Tabby cat than a Torbie but he sure is different.
He still has the orange background to his gray/white stripes so he still fits with his name, Chester Cheetah.
I love this site for all the info and commradary I feel from everyone here.
I am glad you are still going strong and Happy Aniversary.

    Chesters Mom

  24. I found this site by looking up the strange behavior and coloring of Stirfry.
A vet said she was Tortoiseshell and I thought that was a breed.
Like a few others (Bernie that I know of) research of these cats led us to you.
It has made for the finding of many wonderful friends.
    I thank you for that.

And the best thing in that basket is Allegra – but I know you would not giver her up or her even wanting to leave her forever home.

  25. I don’t remember how I found this blog, to be truthful. It might have been linked to from Moderncat or catster or one of the yahoo cat groups to which I belong…I’m a bit disappointed that Allegra doesn’t come with the basket! LOL

  26. We’ve been blessed with torties over the years and are presently owned by two of them, HRH Gabrielle, the little diva with a most purrtastic tortitude who rules the house with a titanium paw; and Molly-Biddy, a seemingly ladylike tortie with a tendency to turn into Panthra the Jungle Cat every time your back is turned. 🙂

Also, happy anniversary! I was lucky to find The Conscious Cat through a friend on Facebook a while back; I love your posts, they never fail to brighten my day. 🙂 Good job!

    Bev

    • Thank you, Bev! From your descriptions of Gabrielle and Molly-Biddy I can see that you totally understand torties, and more importantly, that you understand torties’ expectations of their humans ;-)!

  27. Found you through Facebook. My husband and I are owned by three wonderful cats, Bogey, Bacall and Katharine Hepburn. They let us live here and let us shower them with adoration. They’re quite generous that way! 🙂
