Review: The Sunshine Cat’s Choice

I discovered Nic Tatano’s books earlier this year, when I read The Lost Cats and Lonely Hearts Club. In that book, network reporter Madison Shaw discovers a litter of four orphaned kittens. There are four women at the center of all the action in the book, Madison, and her best friends Tish, A.J. and Rory. When the kittens were old enough to go to their forever homes, guess where they went? The second book in the series The Empire State Cat’s Christmas Gift, features Tish and her kitten. I was delighted when Nic sent me an advance copy of The Sunshine Cat’s Choice, the newest book in the series.

A.J. Scaramucci’s runs the family deli on Staten Island. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to ask for it, but her love life has been sadly lacking in quality if not quantity. When a new business across the street brings two men into her life, she’s presented with a choice. A.J. is tired of dating losers. She wants a man who loves her like her cat Gypsy loves her – a man with “cat values.” Will Gypsy, who A.J. calls “my sunshine,” be able to help her human find true love with the right man?

Just like the first two books, I absolutely adored this one. The story has plenty of twists and turns. All of the characters are immensely likeable, and the relationship between A.J. and Gypsy is beautifully described. You can feel the love between the two come off the pages.

This book is special for more reasons than just that it’s a wonderful love story: it’s a tribute to the real Gypsy. Nic Tatano lost his special girl the end of May. The little torbie (tortoiseshell tabby) who showed up on his doorstep seven years ago became his writing companion, curling up on top of his shoes while he was writing outdoors. After Gypsy died, Nic missed her so much he couldn’t write a single word for three weeks. His wife suggested he work on a new cat book and make Gypsy a character. Since the first book already featured a tortie, and A.J. adopted the Russian Blue kitten in that book, the fictional Gypsy has a different coat than her namesake.

This book can be read as a stand alone, but why not read the other two books in the series as well? I guarantee you that you, too, will fall in love with A.J. Madison, Tish and Rory and their kittens. Click on the book’s cover images below to order from Amazon (available for Kindle and in print.)

Had not heard of this author before. Thanks for the heads up. I’ve never been let down by your book reviews. Do you know if there are plans to have the third book in print sometime?
