On the Upper East Side of Manhattan in a concrete-floored, bunker like space, staff and volunteers care for up to 300 newborn orphan kittens around the clock in a kitten nursery run by the ASPCA. The program has raised 3,500 kittens during in a little over two years. As a result, kitten euthanasias at city shelters are down more than 20%.
