Mews and Nips: 25-Year-Old Cat a Favorite with Pub Patrons

We love senior kitties, and we love working cats, so when we came across this story of a 25-year-old cat in England who still works as a pub cat, we just had to feature it here. The Lancashire Telegraph reports that Rosie is so small she is often mistaken for a kitten, but the white feline has even outlived her 19-year-old daughter Maisie, who died a few years ago. Rosie has become a favorite with pub regulars, and people always want to have their picture taken with her. When asked about Rosie’s secret to longevity, pub landlord Christine Dilworth said “She has always had good company and enjoyed time by the open fire. Perhaps the ale fumes have helped as well.” Read the full story on the Lancashire Telegraph.

If there is a better combination than cats and books, I don’t know what it is, so I was delighted to find a report about library cat Libris, who was rescued by Wesleyan College students in Macon, GA in 2009 and put to work in the school’s Willet Memorial Library. The library’s director says that Libris likes to sleep on the book carts and enjoys riding the elevator. Feline obesity rates are rising at an alarming rate: 53% of America’s cats are overweight. Meow the cat who was surrendered to a Santa Fe shelter is an extreme example of this trend. He weighs in at 39 pounds – the equivalent of a human weighing 600 pounds. Meow was surrendered by his 87-year-old owner who could no longer care for him. The cat is in need of a new home and a caretaker who understands how to get a cat to lose weight safely. Meow has already lost a few pounds while at the shelter, and thanks to his almost instant media fame, he has a waiting list of people interested in adopting him. For more on Meow, visit the Animal Shelter and Humane Society of Santa Fe website. Today’s video is the book trailer for Jackson Galaxy’s upcoming book Cat Daddy: What the World’s Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love and Coming Clean. I had an opportunity to read an advance copy of this book, and the book trailer perfectly reflects this inspirational story of Jackson’s thirteen year relationship with his cat Benny. Look for a full review here on The Conscious Cat on Friday. The book is available for pre-order, and every pre-order helps homeless cats.

Have a great weekend!
