Review and giveaway: Cat Girl’s Day Off by Kimberly Pauley

Cat Girl's Day Off cover

I read a lot of different books from a lot of different genres, but I had never read anything in the Young Adult Fiction category. Which is actually kind of surprising, because one of my guilty pleasures is watching trashy young adult dramas on tv. Shows like Dawson’s Creek (oh, the teenage angst!) and Gossip Girl (of couse, I watch that one strictly because it’s set in my favorite city in the world. Okay, and the glimpse into the “scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite” is fun, too. ) But I digress.

When the publicist for Kimberly Pauley’s latest novel Cat Girl’s Day Off asked whether I would like a review copy, I was intrigued. This is how she described the book:

“Nat Ng has always tried to keep her “talent” of being able to converse with cats a secret. But after Nat’s friends make her watch a viral Internet video, her secret talent suddenly catapults them to the forefront of a celebrity kidnapping mystery and a race against time through Ferris Bueller’s Chicago. The only thing crazier than talking to cats may be what they have to say. “

This was definitely not my usual fare. But a book about a girl who can talk to cats sounded like fun. And I really wanted to know why there’s a pink cat on the cover.

The book is absolutely delightful. Written in a lively, breezy, conversational style, told from the extremely likeable protagonists perspective, the story takes the reader on a wild ride  involving a kidnapped celebrity blogger, a pink cat, a movie set, and a shape-shifting villain. You’ll have to suspend your sense of belief a little, but that’s actually what makes the book such a fun read. It’s pure entertainment, and it features plenty of cats who all have a lot to say.

And you’ll just have to read the book yourself to find out why the cat on the cover is pink.

I highly recommend this book for young adult cat lovers and adult cat lovers who are young at heart.
