Inspiration in Action contest supports veterinary profession and animals in need

As a former veterinary hospital manager, a part of my heart will always be with the veterinary profession. When Heska Corporation, a leading provider of veterinary diagnostic and specialty products, asked me to spread the word about their 2nd Annual Inspiration in Action Contest, I was happy to do so.

The contest is open to U.S. residents who are licensed veterinary professionals, academicians in the field of veterinary medicine, or employed under a licensed veterinary professional. The winner will receive $25,000 for projects that support the veterinary profession and/or the future of veterinary medicine, and, by extension, benefit the health of animals.

“Veterinary professionals have a unique opportunity to impact the human experience through our bond with animals,” says Robert Grieve, Heska’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Heska stays inspired by the many talented individuals that have devoted themselves to exploring innovative ways to support this bond and improve the care veterinarians can provide.”

In honor of the efforts made by our colleagues, Heska promotes this contest as a means to encourage innovation through inspired ideas. Last year’s winners, Pets Forever and World Vets, have experienced increasing returns from the exposure and awareness this contest afforded them.

Last year’s first prize winner, Pets Forever, is a Colorado State University sponsored non-profit program designed to help low-income elderly and disabled Larimer County residents maintain ownership of their pets for as long as possible, and to improve the health and well-being of these pets and owners by providing needed help and resources. Pets Forever used the grand prize money to extend the care that they provide to animals beyond that of wellness exams and vaccinations.

Last years’ second prize winner, World Vets, is a non-profit organization that provides free veterinary aid to animals that otherwise would never receive veterinary attention. World Vets’ work addresses both animal and human health issues by developing sustainable veterinary aid programs to improve animal and human populations in 24 countries. World Vets has used the money from Heska towards the development of a disaster response program with protocols, procedures and adequate training to enable veterinary professionals to assist animals in natural disaster situations.

The winning individual or team who receives the most online votes later in the year will be awarded $25,000. A second place price of $5,000 will also be awarded to the runner up. Deadline for entries is September 30, 2011. For more details on the contest, visit http://heska.com/action.

It’s always nice to see companies give back, Bernadette, and this is a very creative way of doing it that keeps on giving.
